Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by creating resilient learners and empathetic citizens, fostering, supporting, and promoting excellence in learning in an engaging, technology-rich environment balanced with the social and emotional developmental needs of today’s student. The vision of our school is aligned with the purpose of the SC Charter School Act to “create new, innovative, and more flexible ways of educating children within the public school system.” We are in our fifth year; in 2018, we achieved a “good” rating on the state report card.
Our staff implements national best practices of technology learning with teacher-led instruction in a school culture that also nurtures social and emotional learning needed for success throughout our children’s lives. Our emphasis is on small group and individualized instruction to ensure our teaching is targeted at the appropriate levels of our students. Direct instruction and online technology utilizing a classroom rotation, blended learning model allow us to meet the specific needs of each student at their particular pace. Every child has their own iPad or Chromebook that travels home with them each evening. Our rigorous instructional programs include reading and writing materials from the Teacher’s College at Columbia University and Eureka Math.
Carolina Voyager teachers loop with their students. Looping allows teachers to thoroughly and accurately observe and assess students’ academic, social, and emotional development, while building strong relationships with their students and parents, therefore maximizing instructional time and development of the whole child.
The student body at Carolina Voyager is diverse, both racially and socioeconomically. Five minority groups represent thirty-five percent of our student body. Forty-six percent of our student body meets the state definition of students in poverty. Students enroll in Voyager from all across the Charleston County School District.
Carolina Voyager is proud of the accomplishments of our students in our first five years of operation. This year, we will be adding a seventh grade to our student body, and then adding an eighth grade in the 2020-2021 school year. Our maximum enrollment will be 414 students after adding our two eighth grade classes. Our school community is well poised for a bright and promising future.
