Hunley Park helps all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by delivering rigorous curricula and providing learning opportunities to students.
Our school's shared vision states: Hunley Park Elementary School is "Where Potential Strives." We strive in the Hive so we can thrive in the Hive. Staff members attended workshops and conferences, enrolled in courses, and visited other classrooms to enhance instruction as part of our development as we work toward meeting students' needs through a growth mindset and standards-based instruction. The school utilized several research-based intervention programs to assist struggling learners along with the process of Reading Workshop and Writer's Workshop. Our guidance counselor implements a Character Education program and conducts small-group and classroom guidance on topics such as bullying, friendship, conflict resolution, self-esteem, and respect.
Hunley Park faculty and staff came together for school-wide planning in June 2019. A central focus was to align the Hunley Park mission, vision, values, and goals to reflect and support the South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards. During the 2019-20 school year, a focus area for growth for our students was their reading comprehension scores. Data suggested that while grades K-2 showed on-grade reading levels, grades 3-5 students progressively scored lower in these areas. Grade-level teams worked individually and collaboratively to create solutions to increase reading scores by building Grades K-2 and 3-5 Leveled Book Rooms, and lesson plans for Guided Reading to raise the levels of rigor in the classroom.
Hunley Park emphasized the use of technology in teaching and learning for both students and teachers during the past year. Elementary students and teachers used digital platforms provided by the district to transition to a personalized instructional model where students became increasingly responsible for their learning. Our MAP data indicate that we were not as successful as we hoped, but we will continue to grow and improve.
