Each and every American child adds or subtracts, multiplies or divides America’s problems and potential, and fulfills America’s nightmares or dreams.” ~Marian Wright Edelman
Public education is a “right” that comes with major challenges every day. The challenges in Williamsburg are insurmountable. However, great things are happening in the District. Our students are eager to learn and are excelling in and out of the classrooms. When the doors open in the mornings, everyone is invited in. Teaching and learning are top priorities throughout the District.
We have established a partnership with Boeing. We celebrated Boeing Day on January 25, 2019. We also have a partnership with the Governor's School for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Through this partnership, we were able to provide a summer camp for 5th-8th grade students. The main focus of the camp was to encourage female students to explore areas of STEM. The camp was very successful. Students created designs and had a public exhibit to showcase the designs. Additional partnerships include Rotary of Summerton sponsoring students for Palmetto Boys and Girls State, Youth Leadership Program with County Chamber of Commerce, dual credit program with Williamsburg Technical College, paid apprenticeships with local business, and sponsoring of scholarships from a local education foundation.
By strengthening partnerships with business and industry professionals, college and university representatives, district-level and school personnel, parents, students, and alumni, our students are being provided with relevant and meaningful learning experiences that go beyond the walls of the classrooms. These experiences effectively promote and enhance 21st Century learning skills – collaboration, communication, technology literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, innovation and creation
Williamsburg County School District is committed to providing each child with a 21st Century education through a plethora of innovative and results-oriented initiatives. Each initiative, through a synergistic approach, is designed to achieve three outcomes: improve student learning, provide highly effective teaching practices, and support strong leadership. We firmly believe the following initiatives support the characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
During the 2018-2019 school year, we focused on the following proven initiatives below:
- Assessments and Progress Monitoring
- Community Partnerships
- Extended Learning Opportunities
- Global Literacy
- Home-based Early Learning
- Improved Teacher and Leadership Practices
- Project-Based Learning
- Student Data Notebooks and Classroom Data Walls
In summary, the quality of education for our young people is one of the most essential factors in America’s future. The concerted efforts of entire communities—students, parents, teachers, community leaders, business professionals, and educators—working together to create and sustain stimulating and challenging learning environments are what will provide our young people the skills to contribute and lead for generations to come. Our primary goal is to continuously pursue and develop educational programs of quality and excellence, while seeking help and support from the entire school community. As a result, we encourage your active involvement in curricular and extracurricular programs, services, and activities, and we welcome your feedback. We firmly believe that our District can prepare all students for lifelong learning and success in an ever-changing global society.
