Myrtle Beach Middle School, the home of the Seahawks, is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by offering each learner the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
World Class Knowledge is rooted in mastery to the highest level of the South Carolina Standards for Learning. On-grade level success criteria, or goals for achievement, are communicated clearly to students and parents/guardians. Teachers collaborate regularly, designing learning opportunities to ensure that each student has the proper support to achieve mastery and to reach the established academic goals. Students are guided to monitor their progress, conference with teachers, and communicate with parents/guardians regularly about their progress. Students demonstrating the desire or ability to work above grade level or who need extra support are offered enrichment and/or intervention through personalized learning, a variety of course offerings, and regularly scheduled tutoring sessions with our committed and qualified teachers.
World Class Skills are rooted in effective communication. The staff of MBMS is committed to designing and implementing learning opportunities that require students to learn and use work-place skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, reflection, and problem-solving. Opportunities such as Genius Hour, Mock Trial, National History Day, Math Counts, Student Government, and the Hawk Energy Club extend to students additional opportunities to develop their World Class Skills. Technology is a driver of communication, and our students are offered access to the most appropriate technology and applications, along with instruction in digital citizenship.
Life and Career Characteristics are character-driven, and MBMS defines character as a person’s pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings that are based on sound principles, moral judgment, and integrity. We communicate to students, parents, and the greater community our high standards for behavior and interactions. We provide school-wide social-emotional instruction around themes to include: relationships, bullying and harassment, thoughts and emotions, and perspective-taking (putting yourself in someone else’s shoes). Our social-emotional learning program honors the values of each student while communicating the collective values of our school. Our management system includes tiered supports for students, including self-monitoring processes, groups, classes, and individual counseling. MBMS offers a variety of events as our students mature socially during middle school, including events such as pep rallies, dances, club membership, athletic participation, and field trips. Further, we assist students in developing potential career goals and pathways through school-wide use of the KUDER Career Assessment and Inventory, which includes virtual job shadowing. The MBMS Career Day is organized around the KUDER career clusters, and students are able to develop an individual schedule to learn from practitioners currently holding careers of interest.
Myrtle Beach Middle School defines community as choosing to have harmonious fellowship with all people who belong to our school. MBMS is an inclusive environment that strives to honor and respect the voices of all members, to honor and respect the customs and traditions of all members, and to honor and respect the rights of all individuals to live, learn, and work in our learning community. Students and staff are recognized and celebrated for demonstrating character, community, and scholarship within our school community and our greater community. Myrtle Beach Middle School realizes that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce and leaders; we are committed to offering each and every student, along with his or her family, a challenging, nurturing, and safe middle school experience.
