Dear Socastee Middle School Warrior Families:
It is a pleasure to share the contents of this report with our school community. Socastee Middle School is helping all students develop the world class knowledge, skills, and life and career by providing consistent opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork. In addition, Socastee Middle School has high expectations for interpersonal and communication skills, information media and technology skills, and creativity and innovation skills and practices. We are pleased to inform our families and community members that our students had an exceptional school year filled with achievements and accomplishments. Our success this year is a testament to our students’ efforts and our partnerships with Socastee families and community members. With a continued, collective effort, we will establish a tradition of success for many years to come at Socastee Middle School.
In our first school year, Socastee Middle School was named a 2017 - 2018 National Beta School of Merit, we had 23 South Carolina Junior Scholars, three (3) Duke Tip Scholars, three (3) All County orchestra members, four (4) CCU Honor Band members, and two (2) All-County Chorus members. The Spelling and Geography Bee winners competed at regionals and our Geography Bee winner represented Socastee Middle at the state level. Our Mock Trial and Archery Teams each competed at the state level. In addition, our SMS teacher of the year, Mrs. Anila Patel, was named a TOP TEN teacher of the year for Horry County Schools.
At Socastee Middle School, we have high standards and expectations for each and every student in regard to academic performance, co-curricular participation, and responsible citizenship. We have accomplished a great deal in our first year. Our staff members take pride in providing rigorous programs and they recognize the roles they play in helping your children reach their full potential. With the help of our staff, our students sponsored collection drives that benefited community programs such as Help 4 Kids, South Strand Helping Hands, and the Salvation Army. Also, they volunteered their time at the Myrtle Beach Marathon, the Horry County Special Olympics, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department Breakfast with Santa, and other community projects. Providing a great foundation in our first year, our PTSO and School Improvement Council provided incentives for students/staff. Our Robotics teacher applied for, and was awarded, a $2067.00 Tanger Kids grant. Over 40 local businesses participated in career development opportunities, Career Day, Business Shadow Day, and Partners in Education. With regard to technology and innovation, all students were provided a Google Chromebook this year, providing opportunities for creativity and self-direction. In the spirit of teamwork and collaboration our administrative team follows up with teachers in teams, as well as in departmental and staff meetings. Teamwork has helped us to establish an environment of success in all endeavors; we look forward to building on our first-year achievements.
It is great to be a Warrior! As always, we are so excited to see our students grow and learn. Your children have brought joy and happiness to our classrooms, and we are so fortunate to have such a wonderful group of children at SMS. We are truly blessed to work in a great county with a supportive Advisory Board, District Office, and Board of Education. Please know that having your support is an essential part of our success at SMS. We thank you for sharing your child with us. Our goal is to continue to ensure that we are challenging our students to be college and career ready. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions or concerns. Again, thank you so much for your support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa Melchione, Principal
