Northwest Middle School is helping all students develop world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by incorporating 21st century learning opportunities for all students. During the 2017-2018 school year, our enrollment increased and so did the number of educational experiences and supports we provided our students.
We believe middle school should be a time of academic exploration and Northwest strived to expose students to a variety of different experiences to help students grow academically and personally. With over 600 Chromebooks utilized in classrooms, two computer science labs, and virtual learning options, Northwest students had a wealth of opportunity for exposure to technology through a variety of instructional experiences. Over the course of the year students were able to participate in expanded learning events such as a school-wide Career Exploration Day, more focused counseling services and support programs, intramural sports, and both co- and extracurricular learning opportunities. Students continued exploring student interest clubs and earned numerous music and art awards including Superior Band and Chorus ratings, first place art contest winners, and numerous district, region, and state awards. Our students were provided with one of the most impressive fitness areas in the district, due in large part to a $10,000 gift from the Cliffs Residents Outreach group. Northwest’s Media Center was identified as having one of the top book collections in the district.
Northwest was strategic in providing a robust collection of supports to help students be successful. Northwest expanded our course offerings with calculated classes for students who were in need of substantial academic intervention and/or support. In addition to in-class instruction and one-on-one tutoring opportunities with teachers, students were able to attend our Panther Success after school tutoring program to gain extra help and support. Numerous supports related to financial assistance were provided to reduce the impact of disadvantages some students experience.
It is an exciting time to be a part of Northwest Middle School. We are proud of what we accomplished this past year and we look forward to the continued success of our students next year and years to come.
