Georgetown Middle School is a Title I middle school that serves a diverse learning community of 775 students in grades 6-8. Our school is helping all students develop the word class skills and life career characteristics associated with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by “helping the Best get Better” in academics, fine arts, and athletics. At GMS, we believe that all members of the community must be life-long learners for the community to remain healthy and to continue to grow. We believe that all children can learn, and they will rise to the level that teachers and parents expect of them. Our teachers have high expectations for all of their students, regardless of their current achievement levels or any challenges they may face. GMS staff members strive to develop independent, critical thinkers who display positive character traits of good citizenship. To accomplish this goal, professional development was offered throughout the year at the state, district, and school levels. These meetings focus on Student Learning Objectives (SLOs), MDC and LDC, Capturing Kids’ Hearts, and instructional strategies that met the needs of our entire school.
Many of our students participate in extracurricular activities including fine arts and athletics. Our band received an Excellent Rating this past year at the state level. Our sixth-grade academic team won third place all-around at the GCSD Academic Fair. Our 7th & 8th grade Academic Team placed second overall in the county. Our BETA Club placed second overall in technology, and third place overall in t-shirt design at the state convention. The drama class put on a fantastic performance of Annie to a standing room only crowd. The GMS B-Team girls’ basketball team placed third overall in the county. These were just some of our accomplishments during the 17-18 school term.
One of the key components of an effective school is a safe and orderly environment. Without a safe and orderly environment, quality instruction and learning falters. One of our main goals is to ensure that parents, students, and teachers feel confident in the fact that their school is safe. We are committed to keeping our school free from violence and bullying. We are currently in our sixth year of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) in our school, which involves a commitment to teaching and reinforcing responsible, respectful, courteous and kind behavior. Through PBIS and the implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts, which helps in building relationships and processes that bring out the best people, we have seen positive impacts on student behavior and on our overall school environment.
Georgetown Middle School remains steadfast in its commitment to working with our stakeholders, community, and families so that all student experience success and the “Best can continue to get Better.”
