West Ashley-Advanced Studies Magnet (WA-ASM) is helping all students develop world class skills; life skills and career characteristics by providing opportunities for students to be successful. The School Improvement Council of West Ashley Middle Advanced Studies Magnet is pleased to share our progress with our community. This has been another significant year for WA-ASM in our mission to build a stronger connection with our community as we enrich student achievement.
Our school’s persistent initiatives focused on increasing student achievement. We offered targeted instruction to all students based on assessments in reading and math. In an effort to challenge and expose our students, we offered Algebra I, English I, and Spanish I. In addition, WA-ASM continued to implement PBIS to further education of our student’s character.
With a focus on literacy, which we will continue across the curriculum, as we grow a “Community of Readers” within our building. We also offered enrichment sessions to target our students who needed assistance with math. Through our affiliation with the University of South Carolina and Boeing, our students have soared with the opportunity to experience critical thinking STEM/PLTW courses such as Design and Modeling, Flight and Space, and Automation and Robotics. Our Robotics team competed against schools throughout the state in the VEX Robotics, the Zone competition this year. They completed their season with two Tournament Champion trophies, two Excellence Awards, and the Create Award at the state level.
WA-ASM Odyssey of the Mind made it through several rounds of auditions that tested their acting, artistic, creativity, and writing abilities. The end result was a reimagined, modern, and well received adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s beloved classic “Alice in Wonderland.” They placed first in the Division II Mockumentary category in Columbia, and now look to build on the HarborCats’ 36th place finish in last year’s World Finals. Our students also learned the importance of giving through the Pennies for Patients, and other local charities.
We will continue to provide opportunities for increasing parent and community support for WA-ASM. Through the use of School Messenger, the School Website, Family nights, the PTO, and by expanding our business partnerships, we will build on our current level of support. In addition, our mentoring program continues to produces positive results.
WA-ASM will continue to exhibit a constant effort toward communicating our vision and values, while improving student achievement. The new school year pledges to continued growth and success as we continue to develop our students through systems that support world class knowledge and skills along with life and career characteristics.
