The staff at Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School is committed to the Greenville County Schools Building a Better Graduate: Creating Career and College Ready Students, Graduation Plus initiative. Our goal is to develop in all students the world class knowledge, skills, and life and career characteristics necessary for success by providing learning opportunities tailored to meet each student’s individual needs. In addition to our emphasis on academics, we foster and teach the value of education, healthy lifestyles, physical, social and emotional growth, and the character traits of integrity, self-direction, perseverance, work ethic, and interpersonal skills. The G+ Initiative outlines the responsibilities each of us has to create and nurture a learning environment from which our students will not only graduate from high school, but graduate with college credit and/or industry certification.
At Thomas E. Kerns, we believe in educating the whole child and provide cultural experiences through partnerships with organizations such as the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Greenville Little Theater. We maintain a number of partnerships with local faith-based communities, businesses, and a mentoring/service hour supervision program with Southside High School.
In addition to district and state offerings, our staff participates in and leads on-site professional development that supports high-yield instructional practices, positive behavior support, and professionalism. Our primary goal is improving reading and writing performance. We are fortunate to be a one-to-one (IPad technology) school supported by our own Digital Leadership Team that guides and inspires us from Discovery to Transforming to Excelling in the intentional use of technology –assisted instruction that reaches global audiences.
Our mission at Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School is to develop successful, responsible life-long learners. We believe the school, family, and community share the educational responsibility of our students. We desire to make a strong impact on our future South Carolina graduates and community and world leaders. We are TEK, #LearnAtKerns … CATCH the Wildcat Spirit!
