Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy of Florence School District Three is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by focusing on creativity and critical thinking throughout the 2017-2018 school year. By using the Engineering is Elementary Curriculum to provide hands-on, student centered learning, our students learned to think critically and grow in their ability to solve real life problems. The additional STEM classes offered at Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy this year included Robotics, Coding, Gardening, Spanish, and Keyboarding. By offering opportunities beyond the traditional content at the elementary level, our students were given experiences that prepare them for STEM learning at the next level. Students were also given the opportunity to explore a variety of career opportunities through guest speakers in our STEM classes, literature about different careers and a career day with professional, career- oriented leaders from the community and surrounding areas. As a STEM certified school through AdvancEd, our students are knowledgeable in problem based learning and the engineering design process which is used throughout all content areas. The innovation and rigor exhibited at Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy has had a direct impact on our accomplishments this year which include Palmetto’s Finest Finalist (for the second year in a row) and S2TEMSC “Growing in SC: The Future of STEAM is Here” grant recipient and the Dick and Tunky Riley Award (SIC Honor Roll). We have also been given opportunities to speak and present and share at various STEM conferences and STEM panels. We plan to continue these efforts in the future to ensure that our students have the World Class Knowledge and Skills to be productive citizens in the future.Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy of Florence School District Three is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by focusing on creativity and critical thinking throughout the 2017-2018 school year.
