Mt. Pleasant Academy is in transition after 29 years of leadership under one principal. As we grow into what will be the future of MPA, our goal is to provide our students with challenging learning experiences designed to help each student reach their highest potential. This supportive, yet rigorous environment enables us to instill the world-class skill and life and career characteristics outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Students engage in rigorous academic, artistic, and physical curricula that teaches critical thinking through authentic, real world opportunities.
In Charleston County, we believe that we are stronger when we work together on behalf of every child. At Mt. Pleasant Academy, community collaboration and involvement are an integral part of our school culture. This year we have collaborated with the Lowcountry Food Bank to provide students in need with food through the Backpack Buddy program. One other exciting community collaboration is with the East Cooper Faith Network and Friendship AME Church. Through this partnership, we have been able to bring in IBEAM volunteers to support our struggling 2nd grade readers through ongoing mentorship. Another strong aspect of our community collaboration and school wide teamwork is the various events we have hosted to support those in need in the greater community. We have donated over $4,300 in toys to Toys-For-Tots through a school penny drive. This year we hosted a bake sale and casual day in order to give $1,600 to those in need in Texas and Florida after the 2017 hurricane season. Our third grade students also donated time to feed those who are homeless through the Feed-A-Friend initiative. We had a team of thirty faculty, students and families participate in Water Missions: Charleston Walk for Water. Our kindergarteners packed and prepared care packages for those devastated by Hurricane Irma. These are just a few examples of how we have collaborated as a school and community to support others. Our students, faculty, staff and community share values, beliefs and behavior that shape the school’s social norms and create opportunities for everyone to be successful.Together as a school community, we will work to help our students be academically successful as well as encouraging critical and creative thinking so they can be college and career ready.
