World Class Skills Expected of South Carolina Graduates
Hunley Park faculty and staff came together for school-wide planning in June 2018. A central focus was to align the Hunley Park mission, vision, values, and goals to reflect and support the South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
During the 2017-18 school year, a focus area for growth for our students was their reading comprehension scores. Data suggested that while grades K-2 showed on-grade reading and comprehension levels, grades 3-5 students progressively scored lower in these areas. Grade-level teams worked individually and together to create solutions to increase reading scores By building Grades K-2 and 3-5 Leveled Book Rooms, and lesson plans for Guided Reading to raise the levels of rigor in the classroom. With support from the school’s reading coach, teachers focused on vocabulary instruction and text-dependent analysis to achieve the goal of higher ELA scores on the SC READY and SCPASS assessments.
Communication, Information, Media, and Technology
Hunley Park emphasized the use of technology in teaching and learning for both students and teachers during the past year. With support and direction from the District Office, school administrators and teachers selected a limited number of internet-provided instructional programs for all grade levels. Using RedBird, Lexia, Achieve 3000 Reading, and Dreambox Math, teachers were better able to monitor student progress. They found they could support students through differentiated,skills-based small group instruction using data from these programs to meet individual needs. Elementary students and teachers also used learning platforms provided by Google Classroom and Edmodo to transition to a personalized instructional model where students became increasingly responsible for their learning. As all students will need to be proficient in an increasingly electronic learning, work, and professional world, these platforms scaffold students’ abilities to be successful. Our 2018 MAP data indicate that we were not as successful as we hoped, but we will continue to improve.
