St. Matthews K-8 School strives to do what's best for children, by providing them with empowering opportunities to compete and succeed in a global society. Through daily practice of Cardinal Character traits, students use critical thinking and problem solving skills to engage in rigorous and multiple paths of learning. Teachers facilitate effective individualized instruction that is research-based and aligned to the SC Ready standards in order to meet the needs of all students.
Our one-to-one technology initiative for second through eighth grade promotes engineering, mathematics, arts and the social sciences, with a specialization in STEM for seventh and eighth graders. Students in middle school can earn up to five high school credits, which includes a foreign language. St. Matthews K-8 had one student to be a Duke Scholar and twenty five students to be Duke Tip Scholars in grades four through seven. We also had three Regional Science Fair Winners and two classes to become Achieve 3000 reading winners. Additionally, 100% of our students passed the end of the course exam in Algebra I and English I. We also provide St. Matthews K-8 students with an array of enrichment programs that instill lifelong skills, such as Student Council, RIDDE, National Junior Beta Club, Mentoring Programs, Focus Tuesdays, DARE, MLK Oratory Contest, Project Life Positeen and after school Boys and Girls Clubs.
Parents, community, and stakeholders are a significant component to the success of our students. Parents revitalized the PTO program and are looking forward to assisting students in being prepared and successful. The SIC also remained active in the life of the school and community. Our volunteers lend a hand with the distribution of the daily produce provided by the FFVP Program and ensure that all children adhere to school routines and expectations. As part of a healthy living style grant sponsored by South Carolina State University, our students benefit from weekly healthy snacks, agriculture opportunities, and culinary classes. Other community agencies and churches participate in Grandparents’ Day, Muffins for Moms, Veterans Day, African American History, and Hispanic Month. Additionally, the school participates in numerous initiatives such as food drives, and Adopt-a-Family.
It continues to be the goal of St. Matthews K-8 School to continue to develop students who are knowledgeable and confident academically, socially, and emotionally in order to contribute globally. We have, can and will do what’s best for children.
