Following another year of successful Face-To-Face instruction, Hemingway High School charged forward in all efforts to recoup learning losses and to prepare all students as productive citizens and lifelong learners. The administration, faculty, and staff continued to meet every student at his/her point of need by embracing The Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. According to SCDE Survey Results, Hemingway High School continues to provide a safe, caring, and challenging environment that is conducive for academic success. Hemingway High School creates such an environment through our school motto and mantra “Every child, Every day…Together!” A growth mindset is incorporated through the efforts of our teachers. Classroom engagements allow students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers as they are facilitated through the layers of The Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, MTSS, as outlined by Act 213 of The South Carolina State Department of Education. MTSS is a systemic, continuous-improvement framework in which data-based problem solving and decision-making is practiced across all levels of the educational system for supporting students. These efforts include the First Wednesday Community Leader Walk to address SEL. Additionally, endeavors include the use of inquiry-based lessons, rigorous, metacognitive activities, and STEAM Projects, as well as communicating about the individual learning process through ongoing progress monitoring. Complimenting one-on-one assistance from Certified Teachers and Para-Professionals, students used Edgenuity, ALEKS, USA TestPrep, NWEA’s MAP, and Mastery Connect’s TE-21 Assessments to guide academic feedback and further increase rigor. Additionally, Canvas Pages were utilized as another mode for virtual lessons, enrichments, and best practices to sustain ongoing learning. Research-based best practices, high expectations, and parental involvement optimize student success.
By redesigning and refining teaching and learning, Hemingway High School has persevered down the paths of academia, leadership, and empowerment. All teachers participate in professional development with the goal of improving instruction, increasing student learning, and developing student efficacy. Onsite PLC’s and district-wide emersions provide individual assistance with strategies and scaffolds for students to enhance their critical thinking skills that are essential in today’s global society. With visits from The Greenwood Genetics Mobile Lab and Boeing of S.C.’s Be Pro Be Proud Tour, students continue to have opportunities to excel in all areas.
Hemingway High School offers a variety of programs, outside of the classroom, to prepare students for success. Hemingway High school has an active Student Government, The National Beta Club, coed sports, as well as other groups, clubs, and organizations. The school’s FBLA Chapter traveled to Atlanta, GA, earning regional and national awards in technology and mentoring. Moreover, the new eSports gaming room created a new extracurricular opportunity as they prepare for new options for additional growth. These opportunities, for the involvement of all students, foster a nature of collaboration, problem-solving skills, and working as a team. These collaborations, along with service learning projects, led to Hemingway High School being recognized by The State of South Carolina for having the highest percentage of students apply for college on College Application Day by The ACAC.
Well-rounded in all efforts for community involvement, Hemingway High School recognizes the importance of stakeholders for actively educating young people. With an expected 90% passage rate on The SCDE’s EOCEP English II Assessment, teachers and administrators remain committed to communicating with parents, recognizing student achievement, incorporating the use of Student Ambassadors as mentors, hosting regional events, and preparing future leaders. Parent Communication remains ongoing through the use of conference calls, parent/student messaging systems provided by the district, an “Open Door” Policy, and The HHS Website.
The continuous support from the local community in helping mold future graduates and leaders of our state and nation is vital to future success for all students.
