At Rawlinson Road Middle School, we are committed to empowering every Raider to learn, lead, and thrive. Through high-quality instruction, leadership opportunities, social-emotional support, the arts, athletics, and meaningful relationships, we strive to create a school culture where students feel valued, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential. Our focus on the whole child ensures that every student is equipped with the skills, confidence, and character needed for future success.
This year has been one of meaningful growth and achievement for our school. We have continued to strengthen our Tier I instructional practices and deepen our connections with students and families through schoolwide celebrations and family engagement opportunities.
Our teachers work collaboratively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), using data analysis and instructional reflection to improve teaching practices. During PLC time, teachers utilize a cyclical framework focused on ensuring that students receive high-quality instructional activities and assessments. This commitment to professional growth is further supported by monthly professional development opportunities aligned to the South Carolina Teaching Standards 4.0 rubric, ensuring that our educators continuously refine their craft.
To meet the diverse needs of our learners, we provide targeted academic support through Tier II strategies and our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), much of which is embedded within our daily enrichment period, Raider Time. This dedicated time allows us to provide both academic intervention and enrichment opportunities tailored to students’ individual needs while also helping students monitor and track their growth. Our Exceptional Student Educators collaborate with grade-level teachers to support student achievement and monitor academic progress. This year, we are encouraged by growth in several key areas, particularly in 6th-grade Math, 8th-grade Math, and 6th-grade ELA, where MAP assessment data shows an average growth of 6.5 points in achievement scores.
Equally important as academic growth is the development of leadership and character. Each week, students participate in clubs selected based on their personal interests. This cross-grade-level club structure allows students to connect with adults who share similar passions while building relationships with peers who have common interests. Student leadership opportunities through our Student Lighthouse Team, Beta Club, and Raider News Network reinforce our work as a Leader in Me School by integrating the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens into daily practice. Our leadership model, combined with our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, helps create a positive and predictable school culture where students understand and meet behavioral expectations. Our counselors and student services team provide additional support through character education, conflict resolution, and social-emotional skill development.
Our fine arts programs continue to excel. Raider Band students earned both Excellent and Superior ratings at the Carowinds Festival of Music, while Orchestra students earned an Excellent rating at the same event. Chorus students earned Excellent ratings at the South Carolina Music Educators Association assessments. Our theater students also achieved remarkable success, earning 46 Superior ratings at the South Carolina Junior Thespian Festival. Raider athletics provide competitive opportunities in football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track, cheer, and flag football, giving students opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, and school spirit. This year, our 7th-grade girls' basketball and flag football teams capped off outstanding seasons by earning Conference Championship titles.
As we look ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, we are excited to strengthen our partnership with Winthrop University as we welcome seven Resident Teachers who will work alongside and learn from our highly effective Rawlinson Road educators. We remain committed to this partnership and its focus on collaborative teaching practices. Additionally, we will continue to prioritize improving student proficiency in Math and ELA, enhancing wellness and safety supports, and increasing meaningful family engagement. Through our collective efforts, we will continue to build a school where all students are empowered to learn, lead, and thrive.
