Summerville High School (SHS) remains committed to developing students who exemplify the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by fostering world-class knowledge, skills, and life and career readiness. Through the collective efforts of students, staff, families, and the community, SHS continues to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment where all students are empowered to reach their full potential. The school offers a comprehensive academic program aligned with South Carolina standards, including Advanced Placement courses, Early College opportunities, and Career and Technical Education pathways, ensuring that students are prepared for postsecondary success in college, careers, or military service.
A deeper analysis of the comprehensive needs assessment, including EOCEP data, graduation rates, college and career readiness indicators, attendance, and perception surveys, reveals both strengths and areas for growth. While the graduation rate increased to 87.7%, academic performance trends indicate a decline in End-of-Course assessment results across multiple content areas, including Algebra I, Biology, and English II. Additionally, the overall percentage of students passing EOCEP assessments decreased to 70%, reflecting a continued downward trend. At the same time, career readiness indicators exceeded projected targets, demonstrating strength in workforce preparation, while college readiness growth remains slower, indicating the need for increased academic rigor and literacy focus. Student engagement continues to be an area of focus, as chronic absenteeism remains high despite improvement, and student perception data reflects lower satisfaction with the learning environment compared to staff and parents.
Root cause analysis of student achievement data points to several contributing factors, including inconsistent use of formative assessment data to guide instruction, variability in Tier I instructional practices and differentiation, gaps in rigor and alignment to state standards, and ongoing challenges with student attendance impacting continuity of learning. In response, SHS is strengthening its instructional framework through targeted professional development, expanded Professional Learning Communities, increased instructional coaching, and intervention supports such as EOC Boot Camps, tutoring, and Structured Learning Time to better meet the needs of all learners.
Further analysis of the Digital Learning Environment (DLE) goal revealed a decline in implementation, as Classroom Mosaic data dropped below target from 2.68 to 2.48. Identified root causes include inconsistent integration of technology into daily instruction, variability in teacher comfort and training with digital tools, lack of clearly defined expectations and monitoring systems, and limited opportunities for students to use technology in meaningful, student-centered ways such as collaboration, problem-solving, and creation. To address this, SHS will prioritize the intentional integration of digital tools through job-embedded professional development, increased monitoring and feedback through walkthroughs, and a stronger focus on student-centered technology use aligned to district strategic goals.
Summerville High School remains dedicated to continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making and alignment with district priorities. By focusing on strengthening Tier I instruction, increasing student engagement, improving the effective use of digital tools, and expanding supports for all learners—including students with disabilities—the school is actively working to close achievement gaps and improve overall student outcomes. Through these efforts, SHS will continue to build on its tradition of excellence while ensuring that every student is prepared for success beyond graduation.
