Lugoff-Elgin Middle School Annual Reflection 2024–2025
Rebecca Shackleford, Principal
During the 2024–2025 school year, Lugoff-Elgin Middle School remained steadfast in its mission to develop world-class skills and life and career characteristics aligned with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Through strengthened communication, collaboration, and creativity, our school continued to build a learning environment that prepares students for success in an ever-evolving world.
This year, we placed an intentional focus on high-impact instructional practices that are evidence-based and aligned with the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards. Our teachers engaged in ongoing, job-embedded professional development designed to deepen their understanding of rigorous instruction, differentiation, and strategies for increasing student engagement. We prioritized clarity in learning goals, frequent formative assessment, and the use of data cycles to guide instructional decisions.
To ensure equity and academic success for all students, we refined our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to provide timely, targeted interventions. In addition to strengthening Tier 1 core instruction, we leveraged data from universal screeners and progress monitoring tools to tailor instruction at Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels. This proactive approach helped address learning gaps in English Language Arts, math, and science while providing opportunities for acceleration.
We advanced our work in personalized learning by implementing instructional strategies that meet students where they are, including flexible grouping, digital content integration, and student-led goal setting. Project-based learning and performance tasks were used to promote higher-order thinking, real-world application, and deeper understanding of content.
School-wide literacy and numeracy initiatives were reinforced across content areas, with a focus on disciplinary literacy strategies that support comprehension and academic vocabulary development. Teachers utilized instructional frameworks that align with South Carolina’s best practices, including gradual release of responsibility, inquiry-based learning, and explicit modeling.
Communication with families remained a top priority as we strengthened our partnership with parents to support student achievement. We continued to focus on improving attendance, promoting family engagement, and celebrating both academic and personal growth. Regular communication, parent conferences, and collaborative problem-solving contributed to building trust and shared responsibility for student success.
In addition, we remained committed to supporting the whole child by expanding our resources for social-emotional learning and mental health. Through partnerships with school counselors, social workers, and district support teams, we worked to ensure every student felt safe, supported, and valued.
At Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, we believe every child can achieve excellence when given the right tools, support, and opportunities. As we reflect on this year’s accomplishments, we are proud of the instructional growth we have made and look forward to continuing this momentum into the future.
