2024-2025 at James F. Byrnes High School has been a year of purpose, progress, and partnership. Our teachers and staff have worked together to create classrooms that are rich in engaging learning opportunities for every student. By focusing on student engagement and differentiated instruction, we have continued to meet the diverse academic needs of our student body, ensuring that all learners are challenged, supported, and inspired to achieve their personal best.
At the heart of our mission is a clear goal: to prepare every student to graduate on time and leave Byrnes High School college- and career-ready. Whether students pursue a 2-year college, a 4-year university, enter directly into a career, or the military, we are committed to equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and character traits necessary for lifelong success.
Supporting this goal is a wide network of dedicated professionals and programs:
· Every student is supported by a designated assistant principal, school counselor, and Career Development Facilitator, ensuring personalized academic and career planning.
· Through the REBS (Rebel Educators Building Relationships with Students) initiative, students participate in bi-weekly social-emotional learning lessons and the Olweus Bullying Prevention program, fostering a safe and supportive school climate.
· Mental health services and Graduation Coach support provide additional layers of care, addressing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
Additionally, academic success was bolstered through innovative programs such as FLEX-time, the Rebel Success Center, Academic Recapture, and a series of test-prep seminars and workshops, all designed to provide targeted tutoring, remediation, and enrichment. Students participated in hands-on learning at partner institutions like RD Anderson Applied Technology Center and Spartanburg County Master Skills Center and had opportunities for Dual Enrollment at Spartanburg Community College and the University of South Carolina-Upstate, gaining real-world experience in preparation for future careers.
Beyond the classroom, our students thrived in a wide array of extracurricular opportunities. From award-winning athletics and Fine Arts programs to the leadership and service activities offered through our Air Force Junior ROTC, student clubs, and organizations, our students have grown into well-rounded individuals, embodying the characteristics outlined in the South Carolina Profile of the Graduate. The Rebel Regiment Marching Band won the 6A state championship and our theatre group, fishing club, and girls softball teams also took top honors at state-competitions.
As we reflect on the year’s accomplishments, we are proud of the collaborative spirit that defines our school community. At James F. Byrnes High School and throughout Spartanburg School District Five, we remain steadfast in our belief that we are preparing students not only for graduation but for success in a global society—through exceptional educational experiences provided in a safe, caring, and inclusive environment.
