At Wood Elementary, we often say that we are Leading & Learning, but for us, those words are more than a slogan. They describe what happens every day in our classrooms, hallways, and throughout our school community, as we develop students with World Class Skills and Life and Career Characteristics that align with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
When you walk through Wood, you see students taking ownership of their learning, working together to solve problems, and building relationships with their peers and teachers. You see staff members collaborating to improve instruction and finding new ways to support every child. Most importantly, you see a school community that believes all students can learn, grow, and succeed.
Our work is grounded in the OWLS Essentials: Own Your Actions, Work Together, Lead by Example, and Show Respect. These expectations help shape our culture and provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills both inside and outside the classroom. Whether serving on Safety Patrol, helping with Flag Crew or Cafeteria Crew, or contributing during schoolwide celebrations and service opportunities, students learn that leadership comes in many forms.
The same commitment to growth exists among our staff. Teachers meet regularly to plan together, analyze student progress, and share effective instructional practices. This year, teachers took an active role in leading professional development for their colleagues, creating opportunities to learn from one another and strengthen instruction across the school. This work helped not only with day-to-day classroom work but also in raising the school's overall rating on the most recent State Report Card.
Meeting the needs of every learner remains a priority at Wood. Through NEST Time (Next Steps, Engaged Learning, Specific Skills, Scheduled Time), students receive targeted intervention or enrichment based on their individual needs. Teachers use data, goal setting, and ongoing progress monitoring to ensure students receive the support they need to be successful. This commitment extends beyond the school day to after-school programs such as Lex2.5, where participating students demonstrated significant academic growth.
While academic achievement is important, we also believe that school should be a place where families are valued partners in their child’s education. We invite ours to connect in a number of ways, from student-led conferences to special themed content nights and other events. We also want our students to feel connected and celebrated. Throughout the year, students are recognized for their effort, growth, leadership, and accomplishments through opportunities such as HOOTfest, Run Hard, our Book Vending Machine, and family engagement events like Fine Arts Night, themed concerts, and STEM and Literacy Nights.
We know that students learn best when they feel supported. Through strong partnerships with our counselors, social workers, Communities in Schools, families, and community partners, we work to remove barriers and ensure students have what they need to thrive.
At Wood Elementary, Leading & Learning means growing together. It means supporting one another, celebrating progress, and believing that every child can succeed. We are proud of the work happening in our school and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead in the 2026-2027 school year for our students, staff, and community.
