Maryville Elementary School (MES) proudly serves students in grades Pre-K through fifth and has a population of about 450 students. We have 34 full-time certified teachers who are willing and ready to serve our students daily as we work toward accomplishing our schoolwide initiatives. Our mission at Maryville Elementary is to meet the needs of every student through passionate teaching and authentic learning experiences that create a lasting impact. We strive to build confidence in ourselves, one another, and our students by nurturing strong relationships within our school community. Through reflection, innovation, and a willingness to take risks, we pursue excellence and prepare learners for a lifetime of success.
The learning community at MES continues to provide challenging, rigorous and engaging learning tasks where students become active problem-solvers in each of the content areas. Intervention/WIN blocks, small-group instruction, academic tutoring, and reading camps are utilized in order to meet the needs of our children in varying academic levels and from diverse populations. A school-wide, multi-system of support initiative uses data-based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. As teachers continue to use research-based practices and innovative learning tasks, students are continuing to make progress. Data is collected from common assessments, benchmarks, DIBELS, iReady, SC PASS, and SC Ready to monitor students’ progress and to collaborate so that informed, instructional decisions are made based on the individual needs of the student.
Academic success is a priority for all of our students. They are celebrated during the Academic Awards Program each semester, at the end of iReady Benchmark points, as well as at the C.B. Dobson Awards Program. Character development is encouraged and taught through character education, classroom guidance, intervention programs, as well as specialize House Fridays. Each month, a character of the month is chosen from each class who exemplifies the character trait focused on for the month. A special VIP luncheon is held to honor those students monthly. All second graders are afforded the opportunity to participate in Y-Splash and all fourth graders are able to participate in character-building through First Tee Golf. Both programs are sponsor-funded for the school district. Our PTO continues to provide outstanding assistance and support to our teachers, students, and the school through fundraising and other projects throughout the year.
Leadership opportunities are employed through our House system. All students are divided into one of four houses, as well as all staff members. Our four houses are Reveur (House of Dreamers), Isibindi (House of Courage), Altruismo (House of Givers), and Amistad (House of Friendship). House members engage in meaningful service learning projects and partake in activities that develop and demonstrate their leadership skills. They are praised for their leadership skills, academic successes, and responsible actions through the House system. Relationships and bonding have flourished among students and staff as a part of the House system and it has become an enormous part of who we are at MES. Each day, we live and breathe our motto, "Four houses, one family." We also encourage partcipation in our Amazing Shake, a competition for students in grades 3-5 to showcase their soft skills and quick thinking. Through all that we do with our house system, students have the opportunity to grow in various ways that bring out the true leader within at opportunities like The Amazing Shake.
Maryville Elementary, along with the district, continues to work toward meeting the 1:1 initiative with technology. All technological devices are used to increase research based learning within the classroom. We also utilize a morning show, Maryville in the Morning, to give students an opportunity to enhance their communication and production skills.
It is our belief at Maryville that collaboration of home, school, and community will encourage students to develop the self-direction, work ethic, global perspective, and perseverance needed to excel in performance and succeed in life. Each day, we work as a team to fulfill this goal. We continue to provide opportunities for parent and community involvement while working to develop lifelong learners who will respectfully, responsibly, and positively impact our culturally diverse world. At Maryville, we strive for our students to Consider others and be respectful, Own their learning, Lead by Example, Turn knowledge into power, and Strive for excellence… because EVERY DAY is a GREAT DAY to be a COLT!
