Kelly Miller Elementary School is dedicated to developing the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate in all its students. We create an environment that challenges students to use critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. We also emphasize life and career characteristics such as integrity, perseverance, and a global perspective. At KMES, we encourage our students to maintain a Growth Mindset, believing that intelligence can be developed and increased. Students with a growth mindset view challenges as a natural part of improvement. We are committed to increasing our efforts, trying new strategies, and learning more daily.
Our teachers engage in ongoing professional development, including Data Team meetings, Vertical Articulation Collaborative Sessions, Grade Level Team Meetings, Core Subject Committees, and Arts Integration. We strive to develop rigorous and engaging instruction using a S.T.E.A.M.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Medical) approach in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Kelly Miller provides students with highly qualified educators who convey world-class knowledge of curriculum standards.
Academically, our focus is on providing students with pathways to academic growth and success. We are proud of our school-wide initiatives in all core subjects and continue to offer a highly qualified educational atmosphere committed to academic excellence. Programs such as the ROAR Cafe' Reading Room, Project-/Problem-based Learning, Math Application Learning Lab, Coding and Robotics classes contribute to this goal. Additionally, we plan to implement a Reading Interventionist lab for extra support in reading/writing and Pre-Algebra Enrichment for students excelling in mathematics.
Artistically, our students enjoy numerous opportunities to participate in a quality, sequential, comprehensive arts-integrated curriculum while developing an appreciation for visual and performing arts. We offer visual and performing arts experiences such as Jazz Band, Percussion and Wind Ensembles, Concert Bands, Choruses, Honors Art, Tiny Tumblers Gymnastics, Honors Dance, and other afterschool activities alongside regular related arts classes.
Socially, we foster positive character and life skills development through programs like the Principal's Student Advisory Committee, Royal G.E.M.S., and Tied for Success mentoring programs. Our school-wide "OUR HOUSE" PBIS and Ron Clark's Essential 55 Rules for Success help maintain a cohesive school family that demonstrates care and kindness towards everyone.
We are extremely proud of our programs, awards, recognitions, service learning accomplishments, and partnerships. We have been an Arts in the Basic Curriculum Site for ten years and were recently named an Arts in Basic Curriculum School of Distinction. Our school participates annually in United Way and the American Heart Association fundraising activities. We value our continued partnerships with Winthrop University, Subway, Element Electronics, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, St. Paul Baptist Church, Child Evangelism Fellowship, Blackjack Baptist Church, and Food Lion.
