FES Narrative
Flowertown Elementary School Improvement Council works with stakeholders and school leaders to promote the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a shared vision of learning. Much work has been done over the past year to sustain a shared vision by soliciting input from stakeholders about what the community values and what the hopes and dreams are for our students. By connecting and communicating with stakeholders, parents, and community members, our hopes and dreams become a reality. Strong examples of connecting with our parents and stakeholders are evidenced through parent surveys, communication and volunteer logs, personal connections, and being the proud recipient of the 2021 South Carolina School Improvement Council Dick and Tunky Riley Award for School Improvement Council Excellence.
At Flowertown Elementary School (FES) we are proud of our storied past while keeping our focus on the future. FES is dedicated to maintaining high expectations with relationships, rigor, and relevance while supporting strong ties among students, families, and the community. We believe that fostering the development of the whole child is essential in helping our students become lifelong learners and preparing them to succeed in the highly competitive 21st century. The combined collaboration of our faculty, staff, children, families, community partners, PTA, and SIC are dedicated to doing what is best for all children.
Flowertown is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by being student centered and providing a variety of opportunities that include learning labs, extra-curricular activities, and technology designed to help children learn in their particular learning style. Rigorous standards in English Language Arts and math begin in the 4K classroom and continue through fifth grade. Creativity and Innovation are critical skills for our students to embrace. The school’s STEAM lab allows the creative mind to reach beyond where modern-day standards can go. Students are exposed to critical thinking and problem solving challenges that require teamwork, “outside of the box” thinking, and the ability to see a project through. They must navigate obstacles and overcome failures to find what works. The results have produced innovative minds and creative thinking.
In addition to everything the faculty and staff strive to do within the school, FES strives to develop leaders of character by implementing leadership opportunities such as student liaison, news anchor teams, safety patrol, morning and afternoon announcers, student technicians, reading buddies, and student council. Additionally, our school counselors focus on life skills that provide teachable opportunities for students to build character and become leaders of themselves and others. All of these leadership opportunities help to foster the school wide initiative of Capturing Kids Hearts. At FES, we believe that we must capture our student’s hearts before we can capture their minds.
No school can rely on academics alone to provide all that is necessary to meet the challenges of the world today. Flowertown is no different. We are fortunate to have a strong support system in place that consists of parents, faculty, and community members. With the support of the school’s PTA, SIC, and Business Partners in Education, students benefit from parent and community involvement through our student mentoring programs, Baby Bees, and our school food bank and coat closet for those in need of a little extra support, as well as other programs. These entities also work with teachers to help support the academic learning by providing real life connections that help bring further understanding of the learning standards.
Flowertown Elementary School has established high expectations for all stakeholders. Our motto is “Believe” and our faculty and staff do whatever it takes to make sure our students are loved, feel safe, and leave as question marks, not periods. As FES we put children first because we know when you put children first, you can never go wrong.
