As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme School (IB MYP), Hopkins Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by striving to provide a safe, caring, and positive teaching and learning environment for all stakeholders. We work to empower students to excel academically, creatively, and socially to become life learners and contributing citizens in a culturally diverse global world by employing the IB Approaches to Learning Skills in all classes.
Teaching and learning remain our primary areas of focus. Therefore, we empower students to be active learners by developing the IB Learner Profile attributes in each student and engaging them in authentic real-world projects and activities. Despite challenges posed by the country’s pandemic, students are further able to demonstrate their development of the Learner Profile by applying specific skills to promote mathematic and literacy competency. Students are rewarded intrinsically and extrinsically for their improved efforts to meet school and district behavior and academic expectations.
To ensure that students are exposed to higher levels of learning, all certified teachers develop and implement comprehensive units of instruction aligned to the curriculum standards and pacing guides of Richland County School District One and assessed using IB skills based criteria. Our teachers participate in continuous professional development opportunities and work diligently to incorporate the IB philosophy.
As a team effort, our School Improvement Council, volunteers, parents, and partners continue to provide time and resources to support our school. Hopkins Middle School continues to partner with local community partners, organizations, and churches to build a collaborative culture shared with efforts to promote student achievement. It truly takes a village to raise a child; we are transitioning from parent engagement to family engagement to community engagement. We invite all of our stakeholders to participate in our service learning projects, community outreach programs, and school events.
With the support of our teachers, students, parents, community partnerships, and a dedicated School Improvement Council, Hopkins Middle School will continue to create an enriched learning environment to engage every student.
