Irmo Middle School International Academic Magnet is committed to creating an educational environment that will ensure our students success in school and beyond the brick and mortar. We understand that the knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired while in school will be the foundation for future learning and success. Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina graduate by demonstrating high academic achievement, a school culture that supports and challenges students, and providing the foundational skills for lifelong success.
Irmo Middle School continues to excel academically by producing outstanding results. We recruit and retain excellent teachers who are dedicated to the highest level of student success. By establishing a rigorous and relevant instructional environment, we ensure that our students exceed state standards. Our school is helping all students develop world-class skills through our implementation of the International Academic Magnet, I Am Escolares Academy, our work as a Professional Development School with the University of South Carolina (UofSC), and working with the UofSC International School of Business. In addition, being a Professional Development School with the UofSC creates an environment that utilizes current research to guide our whole child instruction while developing a transnational mindset.
The implementation of a well-designed curriculum and various community experiences creates student’s ability to develop collaboration and teamwork, creativity and imagination, and critical thinking and problem solving in order to be successful in a competitive job market. Our students examine critical issues, work in grade level teams, and collaborate with students from around the globe. By using the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations, students develop unique solutions to international problems. In the Fall of 2019, we earned National Magnet Certification from Magnet Schools of America for our work as an International Academic Magnet. We focus on collaboration through our emphasis on small group instruction. This model of instruction allows students opportunities to practice the skills necessary for effective collaboration with one another as well as with their teachers. Students routinely work with others to acquire new skills and apply what they have learned in new situations.
At Irmo Middle School, our goal is to provide our students with experiences and programs of study that will help them become good citizens. We know that characteristics taught in school carry-over to college and career success. Irmo Middle School creates a culture of respect, responsibility, courage, and kindness where students and adults are committed to quality work and citizenship. In addition, IMS exposes students to career options through experiences such as Career Day, job shadowing, National Career Week, monthly career lessons, and participation in the Entrepreneurship Club. Engagement in various career opportunities helps our students to explore pathways that will lead them to increased levels of success.
Our District’s vision is that we “Love and Grow our Students.” We are proud that students at Irmo Middle School are acquiring the types of academic skills and character traits that will prepare them to face these challenges and achieve excellence as leaders of their learning and life.
