Alston Middle School home of the Tigers! In a community full of tradition, the school’s focus as an Arts infused program incorporates creative, visual and performing arts as part of the core academic curriculum. The mission of Alston Middle School is to provide all students with the skills and opportunities to become productive citizens. We believe in a renaissance opportunity for our students, which is composed of strong academic rigor incorporated with a core fine arts program. Each day our teachers have an opportunity to work with our students, the leaders of tomorrow, to guide them to become the very best that they can be.
Established in 1910, the original Alston campus was one of the first African American schools founded in our county. Original school records, athletic and academic accolades are still held within the walls of the current school. Alston, working with the local community and Alston High graduates continues to work to collect stories and artifacts to preserve this historical landmark. Using the Alston High Alma Mater as an inspiration, our Fine Arts department developed and incorporated an Alston Middle School Alma Mater, sung at school events and weekly with the morning announcements.
Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing opportunities for our students to gain exposure in the areas of the arts, curriculum, community service and varied vocational and career fields. As an arts infused middle school, AMS has developed a tradition of pride and excellence in all areas. Alston students select a fine arts core upon enrolling at Alston Middle School and receive high school credit in their 8th grade year upon successful completion of the course. Those courses include art, chorus, piano, band, dance orchestra and theater. In addition, Alston offers additional enrichment courses within the related arts of STEM, physical education, business and foreign language. In coordination with local groups, Alston Middle School students have volunteered time to towards school improvement, collected food and supplies for local charitable organization and have volunteered at local elementary schools. Instilling a feeling of community and service is a core value that our school strives to incorporate into our students and staff experience. Through our career development facilitator, Alston students are exposed to varied career opportunities through guest speakers, interactive online presentations and field trips. At the conclusion of their middle school experience, Alston students have gained exposure and growth through our fine arts and career opportunities provided to them.
As we go into the 2023-2024 school year, we are proud of the accomplishments achieved through the hard work and dedication of our staff and most importantly, our students. It is our mission to collaborate with parents and the community to provide each student an individualized, well-rounded education within a nurturing, safe, and creative environment that inspires each child to reach his or her full potential.
