Jerry Zucker Middle School of Science supports families and their scholars in developing the necessary skills that every scholar needs to achieve college and career readiness, as detailed in the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate. We serve scholars from the North Charleston area through our zone school and partial science magnet program. We offer a rigorous curriculum in all core subjects, as well as unique exploratory courses. Our students have opportunities to earn high school credits in Honors English I, Honors Algebra I, Honors Biology I, Spanish I, and Discovering Computer Science. We also provide support to scholars who demonstrate deficiencies in literacy and numeracy through targeted intervention support systems. This includes intervention exploratory classes, push-in interventions, and flex periods that implement a combination of digital learning platforms and direct instruction to refine and enhance the skills of scholars who may need the added assistance. We also provide a comprehensive character education program using the Second Steps Curriculum and Restorative Practices. These programs prepare students in developing interpersonal skills, learning to accept responsibility, persevering in difficult situations, and regulating self-direction.
We understand that in order to prepare our scholars to compete in global markets and develop the world-class skills they need to achieve success, we must provide more than just academics. Our dedication to developing the whole child is paramount. This year that has included adding support for scholars dealing with the trauma through a partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina. We have increased our parent involvement through several opportunities for parents to visit our school and serve as volunteers. We held quarterly events for parents, including Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Moms, and Coffee with the Principal sessions.
We are committed to building community partnerships that will support our vision of preparing our scholars for success after they have graduated from high school. We have partnered with numerous corporate, faith-based, and civic institutions and the United States Air Force. The experiences provided to our scholars through these essential partnerships will continue their development of becoming world-class learners.
Our staff believes that our scholars have limitless potential to reach their own level of success. Our exemplary teaching force, our community involvement, and our dedication to each student’s well-being are the tenets that guide our decisions. We are committed to continuing to implement rigorous curriculum while providing the wrap-around supports that each individual scholar needs to move toward college and career readiness.
We enjoy serving our scholars each day, and we look forward to continuing to build our relationship between home and school while working together to make our scholars world-class citizens.
