The Sumter High School faculty and staff set high expectations for all students this year in academics, fine arts, athletics, character education, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement. Sumter High School is helping all students develop world-class skills as well as the life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing, facilitating, and designing rigorous academic programs, which include Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment (at both USC and Central Carolina), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Career and Technology Education (CTE) courses. Throughout each class and all educational opportunities at Sumter High School, we continue to focus on and strive to incorporate critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity to enhance every learning experience for our students.
Our students are fortunate to be in a school with dedicated, talented, caring, and professional teachers. We are also grateful to have a very supportive, dedicated, student-centered, and active superintendent, district office staff, and board of trustees. Every decision made at Sumter High School and in the Sumter School District is focused on the safety, education, and development of our students as we prepare them for their future.
Each year the number of students enrolling in challenging, upper-level coursework increases. These academic programs have received local, national, and international recognition and awards. We continue the implementation of the AVID Program, which emphasizes organizational and interpersonal skills, preparing students to be college and career ready upon graduation. This program serves our ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth-grade students. Our school prides itself on having our graduating class receive numerous awards and scholarships.
Sumter High School takes pride in being in the spotlight by having our students display excellence while leading organizations at the state and national levels and earning high ratings and distinguished awards in orchestra, chorus, band, and drama competitions. Our extra-curricular programs provide students the opportunity to experience success while developing the life and career characteristics of perseverance and determination as well as self-direction, collaboration, and teamwork. We are incredibly proud of our athletes for their amazing accomplishments. We were region champions in football, girls basketball, and track and field. Also, we had over sixty senior student-athletes sign up to play on the collegiate level. Numerous student athletes received postseason accolades at the region, state, and all star levels.
As faculty and staff, we embrace the challenge of constantly evolving and growing as professionals in the ever-changing field of education. Our goal continues to be to provide the best, well-rounded educational opportunity for all our students. Sumter High School, together with the Sumter community, fosters the next generation in their pursuit of excellence.
