Summerville High School is dedicated to helping all students develop the world class skills and life/career characteristics included in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We are dedicated to providing exemplary education through the collaborative efforts of students, parents, staff and community by providing a safe environment that nurtures, challenges, and enables individuals to achieve their full potential and prepares them to be lifelong learners.
Summerville High School is truly an institution of world class knowledge. All core academic teachers plan rigorous instructional lessons based on South Carolina State Curriculum Standards. Summerville’s Early College Program allows students an opportunity to gain college credits toward an associate degree while simultaneously achieving credits toward a high school diploma. Advanced Placement courses including but not limited to Calculus, Statistics, Human Geography, Language, Literature, Music Theory, and Psychology offer college level rigor as well. Furthermore, SHS offers a diverse course catalog. Our catalog includes: Spanish, Latin, French, diverse and relevant Social Studies electives, and a Fine Arts program that teaches world class knowledge in a wide array of career readiness disciplines. Our school also offers programs to help remediate students in order to acquire credits to ensure on time graduation. These programs include whole school tutoring time during the lunch period, as well as evening courses and intensive reading instruction by certified reading teachers.
Summerville High School is also a place to develop world class skills. Our engineering department, for example, provides students an opportunity to develop innovative skills such as critical thinking and problem solving that will help them excel in college and in an engineering-related career field. Other courses provide pathways to college and career readiness including our ECPI and Business course selections, which offer Career and Technology Education (CTE) credits to students. Additionally, SHS offers an extensive Biomedical Program. Furthermore, the school’s culinary arts program, which now includes a Baking and Pastry path, continues to thrive by providing expert instruction. This school year, the expert instruction was conducted in fully equipped kitchens, where students were able to learn skills related to baking, equipment use, and food preparation.
The curriculum and extra-curricular activities provided to Summerville High School students help develop the characteristics needed for a student to be college and career ready. Athletic coaches, Fine Arts directors, ROTC instructors, and club sponsors set standards that instill integrity and self-direction. Students who participate in these programs, in correlation with their studies, develop a work ethic and ability to persevere through adversity. The school’s Leadership class helps provide students with the characteristics not only to succeed in college and career, but to also be leaders in their future endeavors beyond high school. These characteristics are exemplified by students using interpersonal skills to create events and programs, such as Teacher Appreciation and School Spirit Weeks that make a positive impact on the culture of the school and the experience of the student body.
