Jesse Boyd Elementary strives to develop our students into productive citizens who exemplify the world class skills and the life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Offering every child every chance to succeed is not only statement--it is what JBE is at its core. Jesse Boyd Elementary School makes it our mission to inspire and equip all to become lifelong learners and productive community members through a challenging and supportive environment which promotes academic excellence, confidence and creativity.
Through the course of 2022-2023 academic year, JBE experienced the continued growth as part of the five-year growth cycle of an International Baccalaureate World School. Through this process, JBE continued implementation of a our IB Action Plan, and during the five-year cycle, we are excited to see JBE continuing to move in a very positive direction. The IB PYP Curriculum is structured in purposeful inquiry that engages students actively in their own learning. The rigorous teaching and learning that occur are built in a collaborative effort from our teachers using the SC standards and the IBPYP program outlines. The curriculum supports students' efforts in obtaining a deep global knowledge in all content areas through transdisciplinary teaching that helps students construct meaning from the world around them by drawing on their prior knowledge, providing provocation through new experiences, and providing opportunities for reflection. Our students continue to grow and excel academically.
At Jesse Boyd, we prepare students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and one another and have the capacity to participate in the world around them by building their world class skills. Our curriculum respects students’ developing ideas about how the world works and encourages them to question, consider and refine their understanding of the social and natural world. Teachers use an inquiry based model of teaching balanced literacy, incorporating science, math, and social studies. Additionally, teachers nurture independent learning, critical thinking, as well as creativity and because we know that learning is social, our students spend a great deal of time working collaboratively with peers to build communication, problem solving, and team working skills. All students have access to technology in their classrooms through classroom computers and smart centers as well as class I-pads, and each student in grades 2-5 has his own MACBOOK used for instruction, communication, and learning. The IB Primary Years Program encourages our students to continually take action based on their learning, and we have many who do just that.
The IBPYP curriculum is unapologetic in efforts to teaching our students to take action based on their learning. In doing so, wrapped in our curriculum are the teachings of the IB learner profile. These characteristics, which mirror great leaders of our world, are taught through literature, science and history lessons as well as through related classes, guidance class and through our numerous before and after school programs. Those attributes are: principled, risk-takers, caring, knowledgeable, balanced, communicators, inquirers, reflective, thinkers, and open-mindedness.
Our SIC continue to work on the singular project of safety working with state and local officials to continually support the efforts to improve safety at JBE. Our PTSO continued their amazing support of our teachers and families. JBE is a leader in offering activities for students and that will continue into the 2023-2024 school year. Our students have numerous other opportunities to learn about the world around them from our community-supported programs, MUSE machine and JBE Action Projects. Our students are caring world citizens who have self-initiated projects to help those in need through many hours of service and numerous dollars raised for local, national, and world charity programs. Helping our students understand that they can be the change they want to see in this world is at the heart of what we do and will continue to do at Jesse Boyd Elementary School.
