Dover Elementary
During the 2023-2024 school year, our school team embraced the following theme: “Mission Possible 2.0". We wholeheartedly believed that we could make a difference in the lives of the students we serve in spite of the hardships we faced. Some staff members were undaunted in the face of teaching students that were several grade levels behind due to absences and missing essential skills. As a result, we have seen marked improvement in our iReady test scores.
It is imperative that we teach students the necessary skills to be productive 21st century citizens. Data indicates that effective use of technology and social media outlets increases productivity. People that can efficiently utilize these tools have the ability to connect, collaborate, and create with others on a global scale. We have decided that we must equip our students to succeed in this arena. Charles Darwin stated the following: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” The faculty and staff members of Dover Elementary have decided that we will view technology as a fundamental component of the teaching and learning continuum. In order to make this belief a reality, the members of the Title I Leadership/Planning Committee, SIC, and PTO decided to implement technology and project-based learning into the instructional curriculum of the school. During the 2019-2020 school year, the school purchased an LU system for students. Due to COVID-19, the students were not able to use the technology. However, this past school year, students were able to use the LU and they loved to practice math using the LU. Some of our new staff members will be trained in the use of this device to ensure that it is used with fidelity and integrity. The faculty and staff members will ensure that 21st Century learning takes place by embracing digital age literacy concepts, inventive thinking, effective communication, and high productivity.
Our school is helping students develop World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by utilizing the latest technology available to each student. In addition to having Clear Touch Boards in every classroom, all students have access to the computer lab. Our students will also be able to participate in project-based learning, and technology-infused instruction. We are helping our students recognize the importance of collaboration and cooperation through the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support Program (PBIS). Students and faculty members have the opportunity to earn “Eagle Cards." Students can earn the cards by exuding positive behaviors and great attendance.
Additionally, the school has decided to continue the student led reading program. Students from 4th grade come down to 4K and read to the four-year old students. The students conduct small group read aloud activities and often read one on one with the younger students in 4K. The students are able to participate in Band, monthly Advocacy meetings, annual Fall Festival, Book Fairs, PTO sponsored dances, PBIS Zumba, school sponsored Field Days, pageants, career days, STC events, magic shows, and other school and community events. The preceding events had to be modified to occur virtually. Overall, Dover Elementary School is dedicated to ensuring each student receives a 21st Century education, empowering them to lead productive lives in a complex and changing world.
