Newberry Elementary School, in collaboration with all community stakeholders, has a mission to equip and empower the whole child to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Our vision is to become an innovative school that attracts students by providing diverse opportunities that help them achieve maximum potential. We serve in a unique capacity operating under the Profile of the South Carolina graduate including efforts to identify the knowledge, skills, and characteristics a high school graduate should possess in order to be prepared as they enter college or pursue a career. The profile is intended to guide all that is done in support of college and career readiness. In collaboration with all community stakeholders, it is our mission to equip and empower the whole child to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. This mission is supported by helping and providing educators, families, community members, and policymakers a vision of educating the whole child through sustainable, collaborative action. Our teachers work to employ strategies as well as appropriate resources to engage students on all levels in meaningful and purposeful academic experiences. Students engage in ceremonies centered on academic excellence (both in Montessori and traditional classes), as well as grade level promotion programs. Additionally, students are recognized in all core subject areas throughout the school year for excellence and effort both academically and behaviorally. One of the best aspects of learning is through real life experiences which NES provides through lessons developed during the learning process. Incorporating real world connections into a lesson plan helps students understand why what they are learning is useful beyond the school setting. It is an approach that works to increase engagement in the learning process as students gain valuable insights into real life applications of the skills they are being taught.
Students are exposed to public speakers, a variety of field studies, and other district-wide functions. Our third, fourth, and fifth -grade students are provided opportunities to attend the Opera House through the Dufford Foundation. Community leaders and local businesses also aid in supporting the various offerings. Incentives are used to emphasize the 7 Mindsets. Students that are displaying those characteristics daily are graciously supported and recognized by local businesses and restaurants. Likewise, students are exposed to programs that allow them to give back to the community, such as Relay for Life, Jump Rope for Heart, and annual food drives for local food pantries. Newberry Elementary is committed to students and the community for which it serves. Administration, faculty, staff, and parents all work together to ensure students have all that they need to be successful in a challenging and ever-changing society.
