By putting Students First, Florence 1 Schools and Lucy T. Davis Elementary are helping students develop world-class skills to meet the standards outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. The mission of Lucy T. Davis is To Educate, Prepare, Inspire! This mission maintains our motivation to create learning experiences that require students to think critically and creatively, while actively collaborating and communicating with others.
As a continuous learning community, teachers participate in ongoing professional developments that focus on improving classroom instructional methods. This school year, teachers attended sessions on Targeted Small Group Instruction, Z Space, VR Goggles, The Writing Process, Orton Gillingham, Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), Math Talk, Depth of Knowledge Questioning (DOK), Lexia, Dreambox, IXL, and Reflex/Frax Math. Weekly planning sessions targeted differentiated instruction methods using data from assessments such as Link It!, STAR Reading, as well as data collected in the classroom.
To ensure student success as members of a global community, we strive to maintain a learning environment that encourages each student to reach their full potential with world-class knowledge & skills. All students received instruction in the STEM, Makerspace, and Gardening Lab, which incorporated elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The students participated in activities such as gardening, coding, robotics, animation, & engineering. To challenge all students, we offer a variety of academic programs such as small group instruction, intervention support, gifted & talented services, special education programs, after-school clubs, and academic after-school programs.
While promoting academics, we also focus on developing the whole child in a culture that teaches respect and responsibility to create productive members of the community. We continue to promote awareness for the community and good health through the Kids Heart Challenge, Supply Drive for area shelters, Boosterthon Fun Run, Salvation Army Food Drive, and the LTD Clothing Closet. Our PBIS Owl Loot incentive program recognizes positive student characteristics and behaviors. Each nine weeks students can shop at the Owl Loot Store purchasing various items, crafts & activities.
At Lucy T. Davis, we believe in schools, families, and communities working together to shape the innovators and leaders of the 21st century. Collaboration between students, teachers, and parents is at the heart of our school. Our parents and community provide continuous support for our instructional programs as well as meeting the needs of our students and school. Our School Improvement Council collaborates to assess our needs and promotes strategies & programs that will address those needs. This support and the continued strive for excellence by our students and staff has led to our school being recognized nationally as a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence. This honor has been made possible through hard work and dedication from our staff, students, parents, and community.
