Oakbrook Elementary School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing them with opportunities to be lifelong learners – academically and socially.
The scholarly journey begins in 4K and extends through fifth grade. Rigorous standards are implemented in the core areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, as well as in the Fine Arts. Students participate in hands-on activities that allow them to correlate what they are learning in the classroom with real-life application. Best teaching practices, along with the district Literacy and Math models, help to ensure students are provided with the opportunity to achieve their personal best. Through the district technology initiative, OES continues to be a 1:1 school, enhancing student proficiency in technology utilizing programs such as Waterford, Imagine Learning, Microsoft Teams, Study Island, and Exact Path. Students participate in whole group activities as well as a targeted learning path. Universal screeners, benchmarks and computer-assisted programs help teachers assess present levels and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each individual learner.
Our kindergarten through second grade teachers provide intensive reading intervention through the University of Florida Literacy Initiative, Tutoring for Beginning Readers. After-school tutoring was conducted several times per week to assist students in areas of need. This experience provided additional time and support for learners to gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum. Critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and teamwork provide a variety of experiences for our students. Creativity and innovation are focuses within our school through our Fine Arts program as well as our STEAM initiatives. OES received several grants this year, including funding for flexible seating, various classroom manipulatives, STEAM kits and Dash robots, as well as supplies and seeds for the school garden. Students will continue to engage in activities that allow them to observe various wildlife, add plants to the garden, harvest the vegetables and wildflowers, and learn about the life cycles of plants and animals.
OES has been recognized as a “National Capturing Kids Hearts Showcase School” for the fifth consecutive year. Building relationships among the students, staff, and families is a high priority. Classrooms focus on building community by developing social contracts, setting up affirmation stations, sharing “Good Things,” and planning teambuilding experiences throughout the year. With the mindset of “If you have a child’s heart, you have a child’s mind,” we continue to build and maintain high-performing teams in each classroom and with our families. OES loves including our families in the fun by hosting grade level showcases, book bingo, fall festival, and award celebrations. Oakbrook Elementary School strives to provide every student with the skills necessary to be college and career ready with relationships, rigor, and relevance.
