Woodruff Primary School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing preschool through second grade students with a safe and secure learning environment. Woodruff Primary School maintains national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) which highlights our deep commitment to offering our young learners the best foundation for their educational journey.
World-class knowledge is being developed through intentional, rigorous, and collaborative planning and daily lessons. Student achievement is a priority for our school as teachers meet weekly and utilize current research and best practices in early childhood development as well as data gleaned from sources such as common assessments, Teaching Strategies GOLD™, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), and the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). Through the use of individualized instruction for all grades, as well as daily observations and informal assessments used to guide instruction, we offer the students at Woodruff Primary school the rigor and opportunities that every child deserves. Universal screeners are administered periodically during the year to identify students who may be at risk for potential learning difficulties. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is utilized, in an effort to ensure all students receive the support and interventions necessary.
Woodruff Primary School’s mission and belief statements directly correlate with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate’s Life and Career Characteristics: integrity, self-direction, global perspective, perseverance, work ethic, and interpersonal skills. As a school, we strive to develop students into self-regulated learners, good decision-makers, and critical thinkers. We continuously ask students to explain their learning and present instruction through real-life situations. This begins with our youngest students, who are encouraged to work through social problems using Dr. Becky Bailey’s social/emotional curriculum, Conscious Discipline®. Self-regulated learning continues through first and second grade where students and teachers collaborate with our librarian to utilize the media center and its resources, while integrating technology via classroom Promethean Boards and iPads on a daily basis. Leadership skills are identified and nurtured in second grade as classes elect student council representatives who meet regularly with the principal to make collaborative, informed decisions for our school family.
In collaboration with the community and families, we hope to reach their maximum potential in all areas. We advocate for students by individualizing academic and social/emotional instruction, by bridging home and school relationships, and by connecting with our close-knit community.
