Our school is helping all scholars develop the world class skills, life, and career characteristics associated with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by….challenging its scholars to reach their full academic, social, and behavioral potential. At Johnakin Middle School, in keeping with our purpose to educate, inspire, and prepare our scholars for high school and beyond. We have four Carnegie Unit courses for the 2021-2022 school year: Algebra 1, English 1, Business Computer Applications, and Keyboarding. The 2021-2022 school year marked a new year full of engagement, teaching, and learning for all. In an effort to increase our scholars’ academic growth, our teachers participated in weekly grade level Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and in monthly department PLCs to share ideas, disaggregate data, plan engaging lessons, and to receive professional development in reading, writing, and math strategies. Consultants, for text dependent writing analysis and solving math applications, were brought in to work with our teachers and scholars. Johnakin Middle School is a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) school. New staff members were trained with the EXCEL model so we could Engage, eXplore, Communicate, Empower, and Launch our scholars every day at JMS. The climate of our school has greatly improved and our staff, scholars, and parents felt much more connected to each other. We Educate 100% of the Scholars 100% of the time. Johnakin Middle School believes every child has the potential to learn at different rates, if given the appropriate resources, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and opportunities. There are many facets of education extending beyond what is solely in textbooks. Character, coupled with education, teaches our scholars to respect, accept, and embrace differences in each other. This enables the educational system to graduate productive citizens. School should be a safe haven for all scholars granting parents and guardians freedom from worrying about the safety of their children, as they know their children are in capable, caring, and loving hands; but, also are in a safe structured environment. Scholars and teachers should feel comfortable and safe in their environment possessing confidence in their school's leadership. Being confident in knowing that administration is vigilant in promoting instruction, health, welfare, safety, and security for everyone. To maintain an effective school it is imperative for both the administration and teachers to communicate with parents and stakeholders, knowing that an open dialogue creates relationships that permit educators to guide and mentor our scholars. Working as a School Community allows parents, stakeholders, educators, and scholars to become diverse individuals contributing to this ever-changing world. Our Johnakin Middle School family truly embraces the school spirit mantra “We are Johnakin”!
