Waccamaw Middle School (WMS) is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by continuing to strive for excellence through addressing the whole child - socially, emotionally, and academically. We are committed to maintaining and achieving high academic standards, creating a school culture that supports and challenges all students, and providing the foundational skills for student success. We are a unified tribe of Warriors discovering how to learn, take ownership, and develop pride in our school and community while becoming productive, successful citizens.
Moving into year two of the COVID-19 pandemic, Waccamaw Middle School utilized our schoolwide instruction in a way that provided assistance and support for all students to close the achievement gap. Intervention, remediation and after school tutoring were provided through our schoolwide systems and accessible for all students as a means of immediate and targeted support. Students’ social emotional learning was supported through our School Counseling Department and the SOS (Signs of Suicide) team. Various informal and formal check-ins were provided throughout the school year based on the needs determined by the Triage team and other staff like the School Counselor, School Psychologist and RBHS (Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Services) Counselor.
Our academic efforts proved to be overall successful as our students showed strengths and growth throughout the year. We had 18 students selected as the SC Junior Scholars for their performance on the PSAT. We had several students receive a perfect score in math on the SC Ready Math assessment. The academic team swept the Georgetown County Academic Team Quiz Bowl. Our highly qualified faculty continued to stay committed by providing rigorous and dynamic instruction.
Our fine arts and athletics departments continued to excel this year. Over half of the students at Waccamaw Middle School participated in one of our successful programs. Our band was the only band selected to perform at the SC School Board Association Annual conference. Nine of our student artists attended the 2022 Artfields Junior Competition in Lake City, SC where their artwork was proudly displayed. Our boys basketball team had an undefeated season and brought home first place in the Black Mingo Middle School Conference tournament and our girls brought home second place. Many of our students even participated at the varsity level at Waccamaw High School.
The mission of Waccamaw Middle School is to ensure that each Warrior is provided a strong, standards based academic foundation, diverse extra-curricular experiences, and opportunities to develop ownership and pride in order to create well rounded lifelong leaders in a safe and supported community. We are committed and focused on student learning. We continually strive to be academically excellent, socially present, and developmentally responsive so that all of our students have the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is designed for adolescent learners. We continue to analyze our assessment and perception data for the purpose of improving our practices and to ensure that we continue on our trajectory of excellence.
