J. Paul Truluck Creative Arts and Science Magnet School (JPT) is an innovative learning community that inspires all to build a better future. Our teachers assist students to develop the skills necessary to be college and career ready in addition to meeting the profile of the SC graduate. Throughout the school year, students are engaged by teachers who facilitate rigorous and challenging lessons. Our students participate in Project Lead the Way, as well as other STEM-centered curricula. We have expanded our advanced placement curriculum to include AP Language & Composition, AP Environmental Science, and AP Music Theory. We offer after-school tutoring for any student needing additional assistance with classwork through our 21st Century Program. For the fifth year, we have brought back the summer reading assignment for middle school and high school students.
We have expanded our arts programs to include dance and theater. Both dance and chorus were featured in ArtFields annual showcase. We had artists in residence opportunities at JPT that included a showcase of Romeo and Juliet with a national theater touring company, as well as performed "Aladdin" the musical. In addition to these arts areas, we also have opportunities for students in fine arts 2-D and 3-D classes, band, guitar, piano, yearbook, and honors and advanced placement classes.
At JPT, we continue to implement the Capturing Kids' Hearts process. Each teacher stands at the door and greets students as they enter the room. We begin our classes with "good things" and make sure to give positive reinforcement to our classmates, teachers, and staff. This program has allowed our teachers to form relationships with the students in the classroom as well as dramatically reduced our number of discipline infractions. We have recently also incorporated culturally responsive teaching professional development through the Elam Institute.
We continue to collaborate with all of our stakeholders: the community, our parents, and district staff, in order to make sure we are doing what is best for the students. We aim to promote a challenging and caring learning environment where all students feel safe and excited about attending school. We will continue to have high expectations for our students so that they are prepared for real-world experiences and a life of success.
