Henry L. Sneed Middle School began its mission of educating young people in 1994. Since its inception, faculty and staff have continued its commitment to provide a balanced, well-rounded education which will prepare students to be successful in high school and beyond by working daily to ensure academic excellence, build community relationships, and equity. Sneed Middle School is a Title I school that serves approximately 700 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from three different attendance zones in the district. At Sneed, we assist students daily with developing the best practice strategies for learning coupled with the life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We have established high expectations for student learning and are working diligently to provide rigorous instruction, which will increase academic achievement in all core content areas. Through Student Support Teams, which consist of School Administrators, Counselors, School Behavioral Health Counselors and Departments Leads, students are provided tools to be academically prepared and socially aware students to the next phase of their education and ultimately developing responsible and productive members of society.
Sneed is currently preparing to become STEM certified. Sneed places a high priority on educating students to be prepared to enter high school advanced level courses and have the knowledge to not only succeed academically but socially excel in an ever changing technological world. We are perfecting the use of Google Classroom through our 1:1 school technology program with Chromebooks. Through this initiative, students are given opportunities to collaborate, problem solve, and create.
In addition, teachers attend Professional Learning Community meetings twice a week to share best practices and to analyze authentic real time student work. Furthermore, student learning opportunities are expanded upon in the four core content areas, as well as, a diverse, well-rounded selection of electives such as :Spanish, Mock Trial, Financial Literacy, Theater, Robotics, Flight and Space, Design and Modeling, App Creators, Green Architecture, Orchestra, Piano, Chorus, Band. Students are encouraged to develop leadership skills through clubs and sports such as, Sophisticated Squires, Book Buddies, Sneed Ambassadors, Football, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Fishing Softball, and Baseball. Our Squire Volleyball team were “City Champs” for the 2021 season. Sneed Band performed at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment and Carowinds Music Festival and earned a Superior at both events!
In FSD1 our mission is to “Educate! Prepare! Inspire!” We share this mission by preparing students to be successful in life. To accomplish this, we focus on increasing the principles of character education and citizenship in our students. We have developed school-wide behavioral expectations for our students and acknowledge positive behavior through incentives such as: Kona Ice Incentive, pep rallies, field day, dances, and other invitations to student events. We also encourage our students to explore careers by participating in career day, Veterans Day, Black History month, and inviting guest speakers and community members to participate in school events.
Increasing parent involvement is very important to the success of our school. Parent conferences are scheduled at various times throughout the year to provide important information about the district’s curriculum, student progress, and individual test results. Parents are encouraged to join our various booster clubs. Parent volunteers are always welcome in our school. In addition, parents are invited to serve on our active Title One Committee, SIT Committee, Association of Parent and Teachers, and School Improvement Council. Several Title One parent workshops and family events are scheduled to encourage family participation and provide a platform for collaboration and learning among our Sneed parents.
