Latta Middle School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by offering science, technology, engineering and math (STEM ) courses. Students are also provided rigorous instruction in math and language arts based on the SC College and Career Readiness Standards.
In addition, seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to earn high school credit in Computer Science. Eighth graders may also earn credit in Algebra I and English I. By earning early credit they are able to focus on subjects and internships during high school that will enhance their career path.
To prepare our students for Algebra in the 8th grade, we are compacting our math standards in grades 6 through 8 to be taught during the 6th and 7th grades so students can focus on Algebra when they reach the 8th grade.
The Viking Technology Academy is our 1:1 initiative that enables students to keep up with the pace of technology today. Every student has access to a Chrome Book which is used to enhance their learning experience during instruction in the classroom.
Latta Middle School’s STEM initiative offers Design and Modeling, Automation & Robotics, Launch Robotics, and Medical Detectives through Project Lead the Way. In addition to learning STEM skills, students also gain an understanding of the soft skills required to be successful in the workforce.
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) continues to be used to foster a positive climate at LMS. We celebrate positive behaviors each day in an effort to reduce negative behaviors, improve school climate, and instill strong life and career characteristics in our students.
We are able to achieve success in preparing our students for the future through the efforts of an excellent teaching faculty, the support of our parents, the efforts of our students, and the trust that exists between the schools and the people of our community.
