Meeting Street--North Charleston Campuses
The Meeting Street Pre-K8 campuses in North Charleston represent what it means to be a South Carolina Public School of Innovation. Neighborhood-serving, community-based, and in partnership with families, Meeting Street offers two years of early childhood education, an extended school day and school year, one of the most competitive teacher compensation systems in the region, and a deep commitment to serving the whole child. Team members participated in over 150 hours of data-driven content professional development in the most recent school years.
Through collaboration and teamwork, our team members continue to learn and instruct on the edge of their craft in order to facilitate high levels of student achievement growth. Through highly rigorous, best-in-class curricula, students are exposed to critical thinking, analysis and authentic reading and writing. Teachers also solidify students' foundation in reading by focusing on explicit phonics instruction and text that support early decoding strategies. Each child’s strengths and weaknesses are addressed in order to provide rich student experiences--providing differentiated instruction based on strong relationships with students and analysis of classroom performance data.
Meeting Street focuses on preparing all students academically for college and career. Our graduates are being prepared to attend the top academic high schools in the region and succeed in the 21st-century global economy. Aligned to the Science of Reading research, our approach to literacy includes utilization of top-rated curricula, assessments, and interventions, and professional development and coaching for staff. Meeting Street also utilizes a top-rated math curriculum and provides program offerings in science, theatre, physical education, and art as the core of the academic experience for all students. In the early grades, there are two teachers in each classroom to help maximize student learning.
Meeting Street also focuses on character education and each student’s social-emotional development, grounded in the school’s eight Paths To Success, which include important skills such as empathy, integrity, citizenship, and curiosity. Meeting Street also provides integrated student support including a medical clinic, a team of interventionists for academic and behavioral needs, and partnerships throughout the community with organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club. Meeting Street also took every necessary step to ensure that COVID had a minimal impact on both student achievement and social-emotional health. Health and Safety are top priorities, and the school continues to follow CCSD protocols.
Looking ahead, Meeting Street is redoubling its commitment to building-out a strong middle school experience. As our campuses grow to become fully-serving Pre-K8 experiences, it requires new leadership and new thinking, including more self-directed learning experiences. As such, Meeting Street is prioritizing hiring outstanding leaders for each "wing" of each campus, so that there is strong leadership for each grade brand. The school leadership at Meeting Street is one of the keys to ongoing success, to ensuring academic, operational, and experiential quality all-around.
