Deer Park Middle School is committed to creating a learning community that will ensure our students’ success in school and in life. We understand that the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired now will be the foundation for future learning. This year we have focused on supporting our scholars and families, by exposing them to rigorous, unique and transformational learning experiences catered to the whole child.
All scholars entered the halls of Deer Park returning to face to face instruction. Scholars were offered After-School tutoring, and Saturday School Credit Recovery. Every month scholars enjoyed our Future Focused Fridays that introduced various career speakers, students participated in PBIS celebrations and club activities. Our Young Men Rise mentoring program offered support to our 6th-8th grade boys. Deer Park continues to recognize the role that social emotional learning plays in educating the whole child. Through the use of the Second Step program, students were exposed to powerful skills and competencies—like handling strong emotions, setting and meeting goals, making good decisions, and forging positive relationships. These lessons help build life and career characteristics such as integrity, self-direction, global perspective, work ethic, and interpersonal skills. Through the use of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), students increased rigor, relevance, and relationships. Students were engaged in college and career readiness literacy practices using AVID strategies, such as WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organization, and Reading) in all subject areas. School-wide, teachers and scholars have access to high-interest, grade-level news articles through Achieve3000 curriculum.
Looking toward the future, Deer Park Middle School will implement a new literacy curriculum this school year in all ELA courses. EL Education is a literacy curriculum that supports college and career readiness through the mastery of complex academic skills. EL Education utilizes learning experiences that promote questioning, reflection, and creating. Scholars will engage with high-interest, rigorous texts and authentic work that empowers them to be leaders and innovators.
In partnership with our students, faculty, staff, parents, and community, we look forward to a bright and successful future that will best prepare students for high school, college, and beyond.
