LBC Middle School is helping all students develop the world-class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment with a relational approach and in collaboration with our students, families and community. Our goal is to develop students of character and leadership who will become life-long learners. They will be well equipped to pursue high school, post-secondary education and careers of their choice, as well as ready and eager to offer creative solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.
Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by participating in our exciting interdisciplinary activities:
· English students enjoy socratic discussion experiences via video conference with special guests including musician Sam Rider.
· Math students follow a station rotation model in their classrooms to facilitate small group and individualized instruction
· Science students completed many hands on labs, such as simple electric motors, electro magnets, pulleys and spring scales, physical and chemical change, acids and bases
· Students participate in Academic Team and compete with other district middle schools
· Students participate in Battle of the Books and compete with other district middle schools.
· Student participate in Future City, where students spend approximately four months creating cities that exist at least 100 years in the future and represent the team’s solution to a citywide sustainability issue.
We conducted virtual Veteran’s Day and Black History celebrations, Awards Day, Pep Rallies, and our Christmas program. We held two Book Fairs in person in conjunction with a Food Truck for the students, staff and community. We were able to hold the Miss LBC Pageant with a few adjustments for Covid-19. During our Acceleration Period, students have learned about medical careers in HOSA, polished their leadership skills in Student Council, prepared to be future teachers in ProTeam, demonstrated their academic expertise in Academic Team, practiced thinking green by building Future Cities, and created memories in Yearbook.
Our own News Crew produced and aired daily our school news. Other character and service activities included donations to the Valley Empty Stocking Fund, the Salvation Army, socks and jeans for needy teens and toiletry items for the homeless shelter in our community. Our students also participated in many sports and fine arts programs. We offer teams in football, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, and golf. We also have band, guitar, art, and foreign language. Our students participated in school performances, All-County and All-State band competitions.
In order to strengthen the literacy skills of our students, we used a Reading Inventory to identify students’ reading levels and participated in the READ 180/System 44 and Math180 intervention programs to improve students’ reading and arithmetic skills. We continue to increase the technology available to our students with all students now receiving their own device. through our one to one initiative. Our teachers participated in District Professional Learning Communities, Literacy Conferences and weekly collaborative planning meetings to study formative assessments and research-based strategies to improve instruction.
We used innovative strategies to increase parental and community involvement and to encourage student attendance through incentives and events including Blood Drives, Food Truck Fridays, Open House, Book Fairs, award ceremonies, and snack giveaways. The support LBC receives from our PTO, parents, community and teachers is invaluable. Working together, we can continue to provide the best 21st Century educational opportunities for our students as they develop into future world leaders.
