In York School District One, Learning, Serving, and Giving as ONE is our vision, and at York Comprehensive High School/Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center, we are making that vision a reality. By continuing our commitment to excellence and focusing on higher levels of student learning and achievement while ensuring a “college going and career-readiness” culture, YCHS/FDJTC is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our connectedness is our greatest strength and our mission "to cultivate a service-oriented community of learners who strive for personal growth and excellence as communicators, collaborators, creators, and critical thinkers" is driving force behind this year’s success.
The curriculum at YCHS/FDJTC is designed to meet the diverse educational needs of the students. They may choose from a variety of courses to prepare them for 2 or 4-year colleges, to enter the workforce with a skill, or to meet IEP goals for completing high school. Students also have the opportunity to take courses for college credit during the school day, early morning, or in the evening. Some of the Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered are English, Calculus, US History, Human Geography, Spanish, and Art. Dual Credit courses offered during the school day are Psychology, Biology 101, Anatomy 210, English 101 & 102, MATH 110, Math 120 (Statistics), History 101, IST 201, Teacher Cadets, and Health Science (AHS 117 and AHS119). Naval JROTC gives many students career and leadership opportunities while inclusion and content mastery classes are offered for students with special needs.
Extra-curricular activities are important at YCHS/FDJTC. With over 50% of our students involved in athletic teams or support activities such as cheerleading and athletic training, there is a great deal of pride for our Cougars! In addition, 28% of our students are in the band, chorus, or drama programs, and a little over 10% participate in NJROTC. Other major activities include clubs such as FCA, world language clubs, honor societies, student government, service clubs, and national organization chapters. Career-related clubs, such as SkillsUSA, FFA, FBLA, HOSA, DECA, and FCCLA, participate at the local and state level in competitions and have earned spots to compete at the national level each year.
York Comprehensive High School/Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center has made great strides over the past several years. While following state/national standards, as well as the High Schools That Work model, we have maintained a high graduation rate while increasing our college and career readiness numbers. This past year’s graduation class included 22 Early College members, 89 honor graduates, 97 diplomas with distinction, 171 career completers, and 5 State Academic Award winners. The class of 2022 amassed over 4.9 million dollars in scholarship money while completing countless hours of community service. We continue to increase in Dual Credit and AP Course opportunities while also increasing our workforce development programs.
