Blacksburg High School embraces the challenge of providing Word Class Knowledge, improving World Class Skills, and the building of Life and Career Characteristics of our students. On the BHS campus, students have access to 13 Advanced Placement courses and 5 dual enrollment courses in which students have the opportunity to earn college credit. Students also have an open catalogue of dual enrollment courses available to them on the campuses of Limestone University and Spartanburg Community College. Students who meet the criteria can participate in the Early College program or the Scholar’s Academy at Limestone College, allowing them to earn an associate’s degree along with their high school diploma. Approximately 96% of the class of 2022 completed the college application process, and approximately 75% of the class of 2022 qualified for assistance through the Palmetto Fellows or LIFE scholarship programs in addition to school-based scholarships. BHS continues to be an AVID school in an effort to create students who can thrive in collaborative environments, can play pivotal roles in the creativity and problem-solving arena, and strengthen to the student’s ability to self-advocate. BHS students have the opportunity to improve workplace skills in their chosen career by attending the Institute of Innovation. While at the Institute of Innovation, students can earn completer status in 23 areas spread across 13 career clusters and obtain national certifications related to their preferred career. BHS’s Career Development facilitator worked with students in grades 9-12 to identify individual strengths in an effort to match individual skill sets and interests to career choices. Over the course of the year, students were exposed various colleges and businesses so that they may have more knowledge when planning their futures beyond high school. BHS placed an emphasis on giving back in an effort to strengthen work ethic and developing a global perspective. Notable service projects include packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, sponsoring local children during the holiday season, decorating the downtown Blacksburg area during the holidays, volunteering for the town’s Christmas celebration, clothing and blanket drives, hosting a community focus town hall, the development of a town scavenger hunt, a bicycle giveaway, and the creation of a community vegetable garden. 2021-2022 produced numerous accolades and recognitions. Highlights of BHS’ success include AP Art achieving a 100% passage rate on the AP exam, students being recognized as AP Scholars, a student recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, more than 60 students enrolling in dual enrollment classes, numerous students completing internships, the BHS Marching Band placing 3rd at the state competition, the BHS Winter Guard placing 1st at the state competition, 2 student athletes being selected to their respective sports 2A All-State teams, and the varsity girls’, varsity baseball, and varsity softball teams making the state playoffs.
