Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by continuing to work together to create a nurturing, calm, safe environment in order to move forward with learning and teaching after a very difficult year.
We began the year with 75% of our students and families being new to us through rezoning after several schools were closed. We have enjoyed getting to know our new families and students and will continue to get to know our newly added families.
Evidence of our dedication to the success of all students can be found in 100% of our 3rd graders meeting required Read to Succeed scores resulting in all 3rd graders being promoted. This work on the part of teachers, interventionists, and coaches requires team planning, focused intervention, and constant communication.
As a Title I school, we worked hard to stay connected with our families through Zoom, providing live demonstrations in the classrooms which were followed by discussions with coaches and teachers. This afforded us the chance to share strategies and celebrations and to provide parent sessions as well. At the end of the year, we were able to hold face to face sessions with parents to help parents plan for summer reading and math activities with their children to reduce summer slide.
Our PTA encouraged students and teachers with treats this year as well as meeting teacher sponsorship requests for teacher grants and materials to help facilitate learning. With limited access to the building, they became creative with celebrations and recognitions for our students and staff. Our SIC also held our hands through limited face to face access and met faithfully to discuss ways we could support existing students and staff, ways to welcome in our new students through rezoning, and ways to welcome and support our new teachers moving from decommissioned schools.
In August, we launched our first phase towards becoming a performing arts program by adding dance. Our students loved this added activity and learned about the history of dance from many regions of the world as well as some choreography. We are committed to continuing exploration of the arts in 2022-2023 and will work with our SIC on next steps of planning and implementation.
