York Intermediate School serves fifth and sixth grade students in York School District One. Our school is preparing all students for world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by aligning our curriculum to a set of rigorous academic standards which are the most essential elements needed to prepare our students for college and a career. Each teacher approaches the standards in math, science, English language arts, and social studies with a similar philosophy of holding students accountable, inspiring them to take ownership of their learning as self-directed learners, and expecting them to show a committed work ethic as they persevere through challenging concepts and rigorous reading.
At York Intermediate School, we understand the importance of literacy and have a collective belief that commitment to literacy success for all students is imperative for fostering future college and career graduates. We believe that all students can move forward toward demonstrating grade level reading proficiency and becoming life-long readers. Our teachers, literacy coach, and media specialist work collectively to ensure that students select books of interest so that students will enjoy what they read and therefore strengthen their desire to read.
Increasing the use of technology has been a major emphasis in our school. This year we became a 1:1 technology school. With the addition of our district technology coaches, our teachers engaged in blended learning professional development activities throughout the year. We are working to promote activities that involve critical thinking and problem solving, as well as teamwork and collaboration through the use of technology.
Collectively, we remind our students of their value as individuals that they are unique among others, and in order to have integrity, they must choose to develop their own mind, their specific talents, their personal interests, and to be true to who they are. At York Intermediate School, we take pride in preparing our students for the next level on their path to college and career readiness.
