With an emphasis on the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, Cherryvale Elementary School strives to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students. To address these needs, the teachers and the staff continued to emphasize three main initiatives, which include the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) to emphasize student achievement, the Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) procedures-as recognized by the South Carolina Arts Commission to emphasize the fine arts, and the Make a Way Hustle University Initiative to increase positive school culture and climate.
Aligning with the college and career readiness goals, the school and the mental health counselors offer individual, small group, and whole classes. The counselors include social and attitudinal development training through the sessions. These meetings help students with their academic and social-emotional needs.
In addition, students have many opportunities to master various computer programs, and develop their artistic skills. Knowing the importance of the arts in the social and academic development of students, Cherryvale Elementary is a proud recipient of two grants, Arts in Basic Curriculum and the South Carolina Department of Social Services grant totaling over $35,000.00. With these funds, teachers and staff expose students to the arts and embed the fine arts standards and objectives into the curriculum and enhanced the pre-school curriculum and learning environment.
The faculty and staff continue to ensure a safe environment for student learning, which includes practicing procedures and protocols that teach students how to respond to various situations and events. Students learn in environments dedicated to the development of a positive culture and learning atmosphere. In addition, students and staff participate in all safety drills and online safety training sessions.
In order to prepare for academic learning, teachers and staff participate in on-going professional development training. Course offerings and sessions allow teachers and staff to grasp effective strategies that support teaching and learning.
With emphasis on raising student achievement, students participated in the Measures of Academic Achievement (MAP) assessments for kindergarten through 5th grade and the state mandated assessments of SC Ready and SCPASS in grades 3-5.
In closing, with the onset and continuation of COVID-19, the Cherryvale administrators, faculty and staff anticipate a very different, but safe and productive school year. Yet, the school and community continued to embrace the motto: “We develop world-class citizens who believe, serve, lead, and achieve greatness" and adopted the theme, “ALL IN & TALONS UP” to emphasize our dedication to our staff and students.
