Wood Report Card Narrative 2021-2022
Wood Elementary School helps all students reach the levels necessary to meet the Profile of the South Carolina graduate. Through rigorous instruction at every grade level, we ensure all students develop the essential skills necessary for critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication in an ever-changing world.
In grades 4K-5, we consistently set high expectations for all students. Students are given the opportunity to collaborate and problem solve across all subject areas. Science lab teachers provide hands-on opportunities for students to work together as they develop critical thinking skills. In addition, STEM activities are incorporated throughout all grade levels to support instruction in the classrooms while providing students with innovative ways to engage with the curriculum. Struggling students are provided assistance through our Response to Intervention model with target instruction. We utilized six reading interventionists and one math interventionist to help provide that extra support in a small group setting in an effort to assist students in becoming proficient with South Carolina standards. Throughout the district, students and teachers participated in Second Steps, a curriculum to support social-emotional learning. So much has changed in the last few years, we have all found life to be challenging. Second Steps has allowed for building strong relationships, understanding a range of feelings, and empowering students to think flexibly and critically as they grow. This, along with so many other opportunities provided at Wood, further reinforces our school's commitment to our mission.
As a school, we believe in community outreach and support. Each partnership established builds a relationship that fosters creative thinking while empowering our students to think globally to help others. Our Communities in Schools representative, school counselors, our social worker, and dedicated teachers provide vast opportunities beyond the classroom. We partner with a local church to provide food assistance through the backpack program for those students in need.
The faculty and staff at Wood Elementary will continue to provide opportunities for our students to develop skills needed to become productive community citizens.
