Hickory Tavern School is helping all students develop world-class skills, build world-class knowledge and build life and career characteristics as outlined by the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. During the 2021-2022 school year, our faculty, staff and community worked hard to create a learning environment that is safe and caring and that is academically challenging. Our school mission, Empowering and Inspiring ALL to Belong, Learn, and Lead to Succeed, reminds our students that ALL are to meet the high expectations we have for them. Faculty and staff build world-class knowledge by providing multiple opportunities for students to think critically and communicate effectively with peers through collaboration to complete challenging and engaging tasks. Our school has begun to use personalized learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students and to empower and inspire ALL students to succeed.
Inside the classrooms, teachers use research-based materials such as Fountas and Pinnell Classroom to build our students’ literary capacity. Cross-curricular projects, including personalized learning projects, provide opportunities for students to incorporate math, science, and social studies content with literacy. These give students opportunities to develop skills for critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Literacy skills are remediated through intensive instruction from reading interventionists. Literacy skills are enhanced outside of the classroom through initiatives such as One Book-One School-One Day, reading challenges from the media specialist, and collaborative activities between K-2 students and 6-8 students. Through the MTSS process, students' behavior and emotional needs are met as well.
Laurens 55’s mission is “Empowering and Inspiring All to be Educated and Informed”. Hickory Tavern School provides students with opportunities to excel not only in the areas of reading, math, science, and social studies but also in the fine arts, visual arts, engineering, and technology. After surveying the needs and interests of students and keeping world-class knowledge and skills in mind, we implemented Project Lead the Way: Gateway, Spanish I, Exploring World Languages, and Career Explorations at Hickory Tavern for the middle grades.
With roots in our community since 1932, Hickory Tavern School has served as a focal point of the surrounding community for decades. Both civic and faith-based organizations provide support for school initiatives and support for families in need of the basic essentials. National Junior Honor Society and Student Council encourages the development of life and career characteristics through fundraisers for Relay for Life and local community needs and working with younger or older grades to provide community services both on campus and off.
At Hickory Tavern School, we believe school, family, and community share the responsibility for educating our students. Our goals for 2022-2023 will continue these efforts to provide our students with the chance to develop world-class skills, build world-class knowledge, and build life and career characteristics.
