Spearman Elementary helps all students develop the world-class skills and life characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring and academically challenging learning environment. With approximately 800 students in grades 4K-5th, Spearman’s highly qualified staff continues to stay focused on our adopted mission statement: "Spearman Elementary is committed to providing each student with world class knowledge, skills and life characteristics based on the individual needs of each student. We strive to make sure every child has the opportunity to learn and be successful in a safe and nurturing environment. We focus on meeting each student's needs and developing the whole child: academically, socially and emotionally. We continuously provide opportunities for parents to be actively involved in their child's education. We invite all of our Spearman families to take part in our annual school-wide Literacy Night. We also provide reading workshops for parents to learn ways to help their children become lifelong readers. We partner with Clemson University and the YMCA to provide after-school programs for our students. SES provides "World Class Knowledge" by providing rigorous standards in language arts and math for career and college readiness. We participate in initiatives that promote high achievement by using the balanced literacy model, hands-on math activities, STEM activities, and writing across the curriculum. We place a strong emphasis on high levels of achievement in literacy by implementing the requirements and standards from the SC Read to Succeed Act. We continue to promote STEM education through our STEM Lab. Students learn to code, work with robotics and problem solve using science, technology, engineering, and math in this new and collaborative setting. Students learn "World Class Skills" by continuing to use technology in innovative ways to collaborate, communicate and create while thinking critically and problem-solving. Our Technology Innovation Initiative provides every child in K-5th grade with iPads. We teach our students "Life and Career Characteristics" such as integrity, work ethic, interpersonal skills, global perspective, and perseverance. In an effort to be proactive, we will continue our implementation of the school-wide Olweus Bullying Prevention Program as well as our Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum. We have character education through our guidance program and participation in the Y Mentor program. At Spearman, we value the importance of providing our students with a variety of experiences; especially in the arts. We offer a Strings program starting in 5th grade where students can receive weekly lessons that can continue through high school. Our Art Program challenges and encourages our students to utilize their artistic side and express themselves through painting, pottery, drawing, etc. Our students have an opportunity to participate in the school chorus and perform at different venues throughout the year such as the Greenville Hospital and local nursing homes. Our Physical Education instruction encourages students to be physically fit and pursue lifelong fitness, which is highlighted by our archery club and 5th-grade Olympics competition. We strive to teach our students how to be leaders and to serve others to make our world better. Our Student Council works weekly on school projects such as recycling. Together with our students, parents, and community, we strive to make sure every student is successful.
